Is this a good price for dumbells and plates? From what i see on the internet it is a good price. I bought all my dumbells from this place about 20min from me and sat i'm going there to pick up some plates for the equipt i ordered from Midwest. I think shipping would cost too much through the mail and i don't believe any other place would be able to let them go for that cheap. I know the sports Authority and places in the mall sell them for $.85/lb. This place i go to has the thin black ones and the guy said they also have olympic ones. Do they all come in standard sizes, because i want to get them sat but my equipt isn't here yet and i don't want them to be to small or big. One more thing,i need something to put down on my hardwood floor in the room i'll be using as my gym. I don't want to put wall to wall carpet. I only need something for about a 6X6' area. I don't drop weights, but i don't want to make noise when i put them down and i know they will on hardwood. I have to go clean that room and unpack boxes before i can set my gym up. My wife says so,and she is the boss. :)

.39 / lb is cheaper than dirt man! They might not be the best plates around but im sure they'll do, just be sure to weigh them and match up pairs of "45's" that actaully weigh the same, Ive had cheap 45's weigh anything from 44 - 51 lbs.

Most bars run 48 - 50mm, most plate makers go with about 50mm holes so they will fit almost any Oly bar so you should be ok. Cheaper plates tend to be drilled a little wider so they might be "sloppy" on the bar but again this doesnt really matter unless you are cleaning / snatching with them.

For the flooring look for a saddler or tack shop (horses!!) near you...they will have rubber mates used for lining stable floors that are extremely dense, hardwearing and usually about 1/3 the price of mats sold for gym floors....most will cut to size so 6 x 6 will not be a problem.

Cheers,

Gav.

Manwhore, what area do u live bro? I work at a Sporting Goods store and we have them for $.35 per pound(dumbbells) and our Barbell and weights are pretty cheap also...A OLY bar and 300lbs go for $100...They aren't the nicest finish on the plates but they get the job done..THis is a steal if you consider you don't have to pay shipping..

Thanks alot bro,but wouldn't the weights still make noise with the hard rubber on the hard wood? I know the gyms put their rubber on top of concrete,at least where i am. I don't think they're cheap plates, either. I get the good dumbells and they're $.39/lb too. I think this guy steals his weights
:) Here are the dumbells i have. Are they the good ones?

Bells look fine, 1 piece mould one usually last forever, ones built from plates tend to wear down over time and the plates get looser and looser till the bell becomes a liability to the user. I pay about 2 times US prices over here in the UK but we get shafted on everything so whats new eh!

I was just thinking of the other kind with the thick handles. I like those but i know they are more expensive. I don't think my guy carries them. Sometimes i tape a sock or 2 around the ones i have now to make the handles thicker. Man,i can't wait to get this gym set up. It's going to be so nice to be able to come home and workout in a nice size area and have protein shakes, water and carbs right here during and after my workouts and be able to take a shower right after. I'm happy, but i still need to clean the room :D I hate cleaning

Those are the same dumbells the store I work at carries...They run $.35 lb but either way I think its a good deal...

anything under 40 cents/pound is a good deal. ALso, Gavin hit it on the head with horse mats. If you arent dropping weights than i done c noise as a concern. ANother perk you will be getting is listening to whatever music u want :D

I don't listen to music when i workout,i like listening to my heavy breathing
:) The noise won't really be a problem but i always like to have some respect for my landlord. I'm sure she would tell me to make all the noise i want but that's just not me. I'm now thinking of getting an area rug. I think that would be enough when i put my weights down. I got most of the stuff out of the room. I was in there with my wife putting together her wardrobe closet, and i still have a good amount of space. It's not a big room but i have about 5' by 9'. I can fit a power rack in there and i'm getting one of those racks for my dumbells. I'll post a pick when i get it set up. I won't be able to get heavy benching in until i get the bar with power rack, but i'll use my dumbells for now. I'm going to get a bench soon. I'm also going to put my pullup bar back in the door frame.

I don't know if you have a "Tractor Supply" near you. If you do , they have the 4x6 stall mats for about 40 bucks. That's the only size they carry, though.

I was in the biz a few years ago and like the other post said anything under.40 lb is a real good price.
