5-alpha-reductase Inhibition & HRT

In an earlier post Swale mentioned that he is not in favor of 5-alpha-reductase inhibition, but did not elaborate much on the reasons for his opinion. I am concerned that my hairline has been rapidly thinning since beginning HRT. Why would it be a bad idea for me to take a product like Finasteride (Propecia)?

if you are only using replacement dosages;ie. 100 mgs per week,i would guess that your hair would thin no matter what.higher androgen levels will speed up MPB but not cause it,as baldness is a genetic factor.as for inhibiting dht,it has been said that dht has a direct effect on libido and any inhibition of dht would hinder that.since restoring a healthy libido is one of the main reasons men opt for such a therapy, inhibiting dht would be defeating the purpose. swale can elaborate more on the subject.

Lets get one thing straight so there isn't any confustion for those not in the know. Androgens can and does cause baldness in individuals at various degree. Yes no amount of AAS can cause Male Pattern Baldness because that is genetic. We all know that increase levels of DHT causes hair thinning(baldness) over time. But 5 alpha reductase inhibitors isn't just useful for assisting with keeping your hair but it is essential to those that are more prone to prostate enlargement and possible prostate cancer. I think that it is a great essential product to your AAS cycle. Libido really won't be a problem with most of us and our Moderately-high AAS cycles and some of us are incorporating many different types of erectile dysfuction drugs. So go for it. use no more than 5mg a day though.
I would love to hear what Swale have to say though. As always everyone have there reasons for there opinions.

i agree with mxim.if finasteride is used to lower dht it may also have an effect on sex drive.that is if you are using trt dosages approx 100mg of test/week im or approx 5mg of androgel/daily.people who use propecia(1 mg of finasteride) have experienced this side effect.
novicebb has a point however that high dosage courses of testosterone for bodybuilding purposes rather than trt doses would probably benefit from lowering dht levels for health reasons but i feel his 5mg day is way too high.however this forum is dedicated to trt so i would agree with mxim.

one item you all have missed and that is Saw palmetto, it works wonders, it takes about 2 good weeks for it to really be absorbed in the system, and it make that urine flow divine. Also, I do not have any issues with baldness, anti e's and saw palmetto is the best therapy for me. Finasteride has too many sides and is indicated to reduce ur libido function. I do not have much/or any problems with Saw Palmetto, but I can assure you that it does work. I also find that increasing dosages of Test is better than increasing the dosages of the DHT converters such as Deca, primo, winstrol, masteron etc........ Doctors have many different studies of what is actually causing the DHT to append itself to the scalp and prostate, but the androgens help to prevent the conversion when used with strict anti e's therapy. I have a doc in my family that is doing extensive research in this matter. Believe it or not it is the low/very low androgenic roids that causes DHT to become such a monster. Now, once you have acquired issues with either of the 2 areas of concern, then testosterone is OUT!!!!! because of the high androgenic effect on an already affected area, and the low andros or the more anabolic roids become much safer because it becomes a form of treatment they provide. i heard this all on the health channel. there are two NY docs that are finding breakthroughs in the prevention or the slowing down of DHT.

peace guys and guys

Instinctively, I just never liked the idea of using finasteride.

I am associated with an international group of men who now suffer permanent Erectile Dysfunction--even though they quit taking it perhaps years ago. I do not think an adequate mechanism has yet been proposed.

Concerns with the escalation of MPB is the only reason I have not pursued HRT. While I think I could benefit greatly from it from a physical standpoint I believe my vain ass would offset that mentally if I were to lose there rest of my frontal hair.

One thing I often wonder is this.......Typically if you read the studies associated with propecia, rogaine etc they indicate its only effective for crown balding and NOT receding hairline. I would think if DHT were the culprit then it should work for all balding. This leads me to wonder if receding frontal hairline is due to genetics only and NOT DHT. It that is the case then AAS should have no impact on the receding hairline. Swale or anyone can you comment on this? If I have not made myself clear I can try to explain better as well.

I can tell you this, that up until I started taking 2.5mg a day finastride (while on cycle, 1mg when off) I was losing my hairline bad. I mean shower drain clogged with hair. Now on finastride? No hairloss at all. I think it's better for prevention than growing anything back. I'm just glad I started using it before it was noticeable.

Vikings--Please put me in contact with the physician you mention. I am VERY much interested in heairng what he/she has to say about the subject, and also to share experiences. I'm currently working with an international group of men who now suffer permanent ill effcets after using finasteride. Thank you.
