A New Jersey man who admitted operating a steroid operation out of his Sayreville home was sentenced in Newark federal court Thursday to 33 months in prison.

Alfred Scarpa, 35, had pleaded guilty in September to possession with intent to distribute anabolic steroids and unlawful possession of firearms by a felon.

Scarpa was facing up to 61/2 years in prison, but Kirsch sought a more lenient sentence because Scarpa has cooperated with investigators, and his assistance led to additional state and federal prosecutions. Kirsch declined to comment when asked if Scarpa's clients included athletes.
