Am I worrying too much?

People are their own worst enemies when it comes to privacy and anonymity. They voluntarily self-disclose way too much personal information. What State do they live in? What city they live in? Their telephone area code? Zip code? Occupation? What university they attend? Name of gym where they train? Name dropping?

Ever bit of information is relatively insignificant in and of itself but when taken together as a composite, it drastically narrows down the number of possibilities when it comes to identification.

Tor and VPN don't work so well anymore.

Without some sort of a proxy you give away your zip code, you give away your state and city. Infact you give them your internet telephone number. All it takes is to look that up and get what information you need from it. So without Tor or a VPN you give that away without even speaking.

You've missed the point. TOR and VPN are excellent tools at protecting anonymity but there utility is undermined when personal information is voluntarily disclosed.

Modify the pics, put something over the table to change/distort, use a reliable, Underground VPN service, use TOR or a SOCKS5 proxy.
Be "paranoid" enough to watch what you say and how you word it, some people even go as far as to change their "typing personality" from on here to more, personal chats.
