American swimmer Jessica Hardy handed 'reduced' drug ban
Telegraph.co.uk, United Kingdom - Simon Hart
American swimmer Jessica Hardy, a former 100 metres breaststroke world record-holder, has been given a "reduced" one-year suspension after testing positive for the banned anabolic steroid clebruterol. [...]
Hardy later blamed her failed test on a contaminated food supplement. Testing positive for an anabolic steroid usually carries a two-year ban under the World Anti-Doping Code.
Hardy's ban ends on July 31, allowing her to return to competition in August though not in time for the World Championships in Rome.
The panel said in a statement that it retained jurisdiction over Hardy's case and could reduce the ban further if she was ruled ineligible to compete at the 2012 London Olympics under a new International Olympic Committee rule.
In April, five Chinese swimmers were handed two-year suspensions for testing positive for the same steroid. Their coaches all also were handed two-year bans.
