Any use for sublingual testosterone drops?

My endocrinologist supplied me with a vial of "pure testosterone" for sublingual administration. His instruction was to use the vial daily in the morning to "perk [me] up like a cup of coffee" (his words.) He administered some to me right in the office, to "see if it would bring the color back into [my] face."

It appears to be a vial of testosterone dissolved in propylene glycol. I'm wary of the idea of sublingual propylene glycol. Moreover, I'm wary of the side effects of non-timed release sublingual testosterone administration.

He seems to think I can use it like a 'magic potion' before sex and to reduce morning sluggishness.

I felt awful after administration. Libido did not increase. I have not used it since.

Could sublingual testosterone have any possible benefit? What good would a short term increase in testosterone do? What could be the possible side effects? Would this cause DHT to spike?

[The doctor described is a reputable one and has authored at least two books on the subject of testosterone replacement.]

Sounds good.. you could smoke it in an e-cig since that's all their liquid is is PG (harmless) and flavoring (nicotine if you want that too). :)

As for how you felt, talk to your talk about it. See if he'll do a blood test after you take it and feel like crap.

I have never heard of this, but it sounds pretty amazing/hilarious. You make your doctor sound like Hitler's doctor...like he is administering you amphetamines to perk you up. Who knows. Hopefully Scally chimes in with some information about this.

This is pure BS. Who the hell does he/she think they are? If what you are saying is true, run as fast as you can. While all forms of testosterone administration have been investigated ($$$), there is no sublingual preparation available. There is a buccal preparation (Striant) available, but it is a very poor mode of therapy.

Did you have to buy this from the doctor? Or his/her pharmacy?

Dr. Crisler talks about using testosterone troches in his 1 hour presentation. I guess this would be about the same. Other than his presentation, I had never heard of them before.

I will comment later, but this has no place in medical care, none. A note from Dr. John Crisler:

Thank you for the insights.

Yes, I did. He's affiliated with a compounding pharmacy. It was Eugene Shippen, author of The Testosterone Syndrome.

These aren't the troches like Dr. Crisler sells. It's actually an eyedropper bottle upon which is handwritten: "Testosterone 25mg/ml PG Drops." It tastes like rubbing alcohol.

Should I be concerned that this thread ended as soon as I mentioned the name of the practitioner?

I ought to mention that after the first round of HRT treatment, the only test he wanted to see was Total Testosterone. I thought that was a little strange, especially since I repeatedly told him that my particular response to endogenous testosterone in the past has been that my free T, E2, DHT, etc skyrocket while my SHBG plummets.

I ought to drop this doctor, right?

I don't know. It depends on your trust in this physician and your situation that led him to him. Your doctor seems to be well respected in the HRT community, although some have issues with him.

I don't know much about him, and he seems to have little, if any, web presence. Does he accept insurance? Did another physician or someone else you trust refer you to him? Does he offer other homeopathic treatment? Does he try to sell you stuff you feel you don't need? If you are wondering - what is with all the questions? - I am just curious about him and his treatments.

No, he does not accept insurance. You must pay $650 for the initial consultation and $150 for each subsequent. Medications that he prescribes will come from his partner compounding pharmacy and will be shipped to your house. He made a number of suggestions regarding supplements like Maca, Yohimbe, Saw Palmetto, etc. I didn't feel like he was pushing anything on me.

He seemed very well intentioned, but set in his ways. He didn't want to listen to any suggestions about investigating possible thyroid or metabolic disorders. He does not believe in free testosterone readings; he says they are always flawed.

I know that he is respected. That's why I was so curious about this seemingly bizarre route of testosterone administration. Liquid testosterone in the mouth for 30 seconds and then swallow it? Doesn't sound realistic to me. Even Dr. Crisler's troches are lozenges that remain for about 10 minutes.

I went to see him because I know he offers "alternative" therapies such as using Clomid as sole HRT. I also wanted a second opinion from one of the few "big names" in HRT.

Odd he did not want to get into the thyroid/metabolic stuff. That seems to go hand in hand with most current HRT. What was his reasoning/logic? Was the compounding pharmacy more expensive than you thought elsewhere?

I really cannot comment on the liquid testosterone. What did he give you for your actual HRT? I am assuming the liquid stuff was just for that "extra edge." DId he offer any explanation as to why anything extra would be needed on top of his actual long term regimen?

The compounding pharmacy had reasonable prices. It probably cost less than ordering anywhere else. Nothing over $60. Of course, everything dispensed was generic.

He prescribed Clomid for TRT.

I have no idea why he gave me the testosterone liquid. He returned to the office with it in hand, saying "Here, open your mouth, I want to see if this brings back some color into your face." He then handed it to me and told me it was mine and that it will perk me up in the mornings. He suggested I use it before sex (along with Cialis.)

I canceled my follow-up with him when I discovered that he only wanted to look at "total testosterone" and make judgments from there.

Interesting. What was the clomid dosage? How old are you? What is the cause of your low testosterone?

He prescribed Clomid at 15mg EoD.

I'm now 28 years old. I've been officially struggling with this problem and various doctors since age 19. First symptoms appeared around age 16.

I have low SHBG and my body can't handle a higher level of testosterone. Additional testosterone just drops SHBG even further. Officially, I'm "secondary."
