School enlists student athletes to warn of steroid use

[SIZE=-1]The Pittsburgh Steelers foot the bill for ATLAS and ATHENA by funding materials, curriculum and a trip to Heinz Field for student and facilitator training. The initiative is funded by a $1.2 million grant from the NFL Youth Football Fund. [SIZE=-1]The Steelers, one of 16 NFL teams that participate in the initiative, selected Penns Manor - along with Hampton, North Hills, West Allegheny and Baldwin high schools - to receive funding. The NFL partnered with Oregon Health and Science University, where the ATLAS and ATHENA programs were developed by Dr. Linn Goldberg and Dr. Diane Elliot. OHSU provides the curriculum, manpower and training and checks in with schools to monitor progress.[/SIZE][/SIZE]

[SIZE=-1]The high schools will begin its ATLAS (Athletes Training & Learning to Avoid Steroids) program, geared toward males, and ATHENA (Athletes Targeting Healthy Exercise & Nutrition Alternatives) program, geared toward females, to provide information on nutrition and strength-training alternatives to the use of alcohol and illicit and performing-enhancing drugs.[/SIZE]
