GOLD Coast gyms are being raided by Customs officers searching for steroids and banned substances as the city's image-obsessed culture has young men pushing the legal limits to get their ideal body.
Fitness industry sources say up to 70 per cent of Gold Coast male gym junkies -- usually aged between 20 and 30 -- are so eager to get a "massive" physique they are dabbling in steroid use with drugs sourced from the black market.
It comes as Customs and Border Protection officers and police armed with search warrants raided one central Gold Coast gym and two homes on January 31, sifting through the property of personal trainers, uncovering a stash of illegal drugs in liquid and powder form.
No one has been charged yet but investigations are continuing.
