Biohacker Ben Greenfield: the alpha male’s alpha male
In the wild, manly environs of wolf and cougar country, in a cosy wooden-slatted family home, an American man in a tank top and Bermuda shorts swings energetically upside down from the first-floor banister in a yoga sling. He is narrating the story of his success and doing it in such a calm, personable way that if you heard just his disembodied voice, you’d have no idea that to appease his short attention span he’s now hanging upside down doing inverted sit-ups. He’s just turned 40. He says his biological age is nine. He’s affectionately referred to as a lot of different things by his many admirers, depending on the specific problem they want him to solve: “superman”, “elite biohacker” and – to his mild embarrassment – “the penis guy”.
Ben Greenfield is a person so focused, so ultra-logical in everything he does, he often comes across as quite mad. He’s living proof of the power of extreme mind-body-spirit self-optimisation. And here, working from home on the fringes of the pretty riverside town of Spokane, Washington, 100 miles south of the Canadian border, west of the Rockies and 280 miles east of the Seattle coast, it’s part of his job to convey his special wisdom to the masses, or certainly to masses of men.

Greenfield’s 15 extreme bodyhacks
To hack your sex life
* Buy a “Private Penis Gym” on Amazon, £90. This resistance training kit features a weighted base that fits around the penis and an attachable magnetic weight. To strengthen male pelvic floor muscles: place the kit around an erection and lift the weight up and down by squeezing and releasing pelvic muscles. Do 20 rapid flexes.
* Clinics in America offer a noninvasive treatment called GAINSWave. Pads are hooked up to the numbed penis and it is blasted with soundwaves. This low-intensity shockwave therapy supposedly “wakes up” dormant stem cells in the penis and increases blood flow to improve sexual performance.
To boost testosterone
* Get a full-body LED red-light therapy device online (around £500), which looks like a sunbed. Stand in front of it naked to allow the red light to shine on your testicles. Red light increases the activity of the cells in the testes that are responsible for testosterone production.
To raise tiny superhumans
* Encourage children to eat their bogies. “We’re actually hard-wired to eat our own bogies; strengthens our immune systems,” claims Greenfield.
To burn fat
* Greenfield takes inspiration from “the Iceman” Wim Hof, the 60-year-old Dutch extreme athlete who set world records for swimming under ice. Tap into the power of cold by taking a 5-minute freezing shower each morning for 21 days. This activates “cold thermogenesis”, the process where the body produces heat in cold temperatures by burning fat on the stomach, buttocks, hips and legs.
To spark creativity
* Microdose LSD – between 5 and 20 micrograms. Greenfield recommends measuring out the psychedelic using the “volumetric dosing” method, where he first dissolves each tab into vodka, then pipettes that onto blotting paper. “If you take slightly too much LSD, a small dose of CBD [cannabis] knocks the edge off,” he says.
