Buchner Filter paper .22

I bought a new setup a while back and I am getting ready to brew some test c and tren E. It is a Buchner style with a Filtering flask. I have sterilized everything but I am wondering about the filter disc themselves being sterile. They are not individually wrapped but they are foxx life 90cm .22 micron. Do i need to sterilize these also? and if so just how the fuck am I supposed to do that? Anyone who uses this setup please give me a shout?

No they dont need sterilized
Stay away from them.
Oils can leak below the filter membrane, leaving them unfiltered without you even noticing it.

They're just meant for particulate matter reduction, not for sterility.

So stay away from them.

If you pre soak the paper disc with BA and start the vacuum it seals tight against the bottom of the Büchner funnel though. If they’re not for sterilization why do they sell .22 micron filters for them?

Your absolutely right about having the filter presoaked and vacuum. The oil is to viscous just to seep through the filter without vacuum if you have it setup correctly

Thanks brother. Also were you serious about not needing to somehow sterilize the filter disc? I think as long as I take it out of the package and directly to the sterile buchner without it touching everything else I should be ok, what do you think?

To be honest the. 22 filter does not need to be sterile. The pores in the filter are small enough to remove bacteria and particulates, but I would still use dry heat sterilization after your done filtering your solution.

As in bake the finished oil in an oven? if so how long and what temp?

Even with vacuum, oil can still leak below unfiltered.

It's better to have something that grips the filter membrane around to prevent leaks. The syringe or bottle top filters do just that and they're cheap and reliable.

212° for 15 minutes
I think this is Ill advised. First of all 212 for 15 minutes probably won't do shit. Furthermore, you've already sterilized the brew with your filter. AND.. dry heat is the recommended procedure for glassware and tools. I suppose it wouldn't hurt, but make sure you vent them bottles.

Personally. Once it's gone through that filter and into the flask, it should damn we'll be sterile. What you did leading up to that point, is what makes the difference.

This point has been argued in the past, people were even pressure cooking/ autoclaving there filtered gear! Lol It's a waste of time, and makes little sense.

Be careful who you chose to listen to.

Good luck

I am very cautious as to who I listen too. I am an Engineer by trade so everything I do will get thought about extensively. The whole process. I usually use filter syringes or bottle tops but I am getting into more volume and Buchner seemed to be the way to go. All I needed to know was if I had to Sterilize the paper filter disc themselves.

Thanks for you comment!!

Dry heat sterilization in a media bottle isn't rocket science. I always air on the side of caution, better to be safe than sorry. I mean we are injecting into the body which pretty much by passes all mean of the body's filtration system.

It cant really hurt to do it I agree....I think it should be a higher temp though right? Possibly longer duration too?
