Smelling salts pretty much = ammonia.
Its being used since ages, originally to induce a noxious reflex to counteract syncope (fainting).
The fumes trigger a breathing reflex causing the lungs to breathe quick and deep to clear the nasal passage - the workings of smelling salts.
For athletes, lifter's - breathing rate goes up = increased heart rate = increased alertness.
If not abused, smelling salts are generally safe to use.
Of course with chronic abuse - there are negative effects, e.g: degradation of the nasal membrane etc.
IMHO, unless you are a power lifter, chasing that 1 RM, don't see much utility.
Nice
Yeaj, I use for anything above RPE 9.5 at a minimum of a heavy triple to gauge 1RM PR strength for a future lift.
So probably a little less than once per month.
