1971 Mr America and 3x IFBB Pro title holder Casey Viator has died at the age of 62, on his birthday (September 4th). Viator was found face down at his home in Clearwater, Florida by longtime girlfriend, Cheryl Harris. While an autopsy is imminent, Harris believes his death was the result of a heart attack. According to Harris, Viator had been diagnosed with high blood pressure and early congestive heart disease several years ago and, as of late, he had not seen his cardiologist to renew all his prescriptions. Whether this contributed to his death is unclear at this time."

There is a disrespectfull comment ib rthe original story claiming he was fat.

Pics of him in the last 3 years show that he was indeed huge, muscle huge, but also too much fat huge. He looked like he was strong as hell.

I wonder if he did cardio? It seems that he did not take his bp and heart issues very seriously.

Casey Viator placed an emphasis on his health according to an interview he gave to David Robson for bodybuilding.com in 2004. He was critical of the current extreme drug use in competitive bodybuilding.

Anytime a bodybuilder dies, whether he's in his 30s or in his 60s, the specter of steroids always comes up. PEDs may have played a role, but the hysteria surrounding steroids often causes people to overlook many other contributing factors. And some of these could be much more significant e.g. lifestyle, genetics, BMI, etc. Keep in mind that Viator left the world of competitive bodybuilding over 30 years ago at the age of 32.

RIP, Casey Viator.

[ Q ] Describe, if you can, the bodybuilding culture of the 70s. How does it differ from today's bodybuilding scene?

A: It was a bunch more laid back then. The bodybuilder's of today have to do such extreme chemicals just to get close to the top.

I don't think I would want to go that extreme, and put my health on the line. There should be a healthy life after competing, I've seen a bunch of tragic cases just lately. The future for healthy bodybuilding looks grim, at this point.

[ Q ] Bodybuilding does seem to be more about the business of winning nowadays. You obviously feel that health should be a main goal. What are your main goals Casey?

A: To live to a healthy old age and still function as I did in my youth.
Also to keep helping people to reach their goals. It's very satisfying and rewarding.

[...]

[ Q ] Finally Casey, what are your thoughts on the future of bodybuilding?

A: I'm a little concerned about the large amounts of chemicals these guys are using, and I hope, somehow it can be toned down in the future.

It hurts to see these guys ruining there health, just for cash and trophy's. There is a wonderful life after competing if you don't damage your insides too much with chemicals.

IMO, AAS politicization has done far more damage than any good intended. Why is it taken as almost fact that nonprescription AAS use is not deserving of proper medical care. In almost 100% of the patient presentations where they saw doctors previously, I was relayed stories about their mistreatment. Further, the ignorance by physicians surrounding AAS is astounding. I am not saying this is a contributory cause for the death, but who would visit a doctor if they were treated poorly or was oblivious for the science.

It's sad but true. I have family members who are heroin addicts. I'm talking the dregs of society leaching off the system every possible way. They get treated like the bees knees when they go to the Dr or Hospital, and all their BS treatments are free. A health conscious bodybuilder / athlete gets treated worse then George Zimmerman if he tells the Dr about his steroid use.

The propaganda is insane. I remember a long time ago when my mother found out I was cycling steroids. She called me up and wanted me to go get a CAT Scan ASAP to make sure I didn't have any brain tumors [:o)]

As an older BB I was a big fan of Casey Viator. He followed the same type of High Intensity Training (HIT) as pioneered by the great Mike Mentzer. HIT was and still is the foundation of my training. No marathon training session, only hard, intense bombing of the muscles. For those of you unfamiliar with Casey you should google images of him. He was just massive and if I remember correctly he was the youngest Mr America at the time.

When I see my heroes from my younger days passing away I feel a small part of me is dying with them. Perhaps this is just me aging and thinking of my own mortality and perhaps this is my own measurement of what time I may have left. This is a message that our time on earth is limited and we have to make the most of it now, and take care of ourselves.

What many folks fail to realize is that weight is weight when it comes to taxing one's heart. Do not assume if the weight is muscle weight and not fat, that this makes weighing a lot heart safe. It doesn't.

Congestive heart failure is caused by a weakening of the heart muscle. There are many reasons this can happen. One reason is carrying around a huge load of weight, including muscle weight. Another reason is simply age. Not all people age in the same way.

While 62 years seems young, it doesn't insure that one's heart is healthy.

Unfortunately weight exercise by itself is found to harden arteries. Do a least 10 minutes of cardio, even mild walking, to avoid.

Sad, i am also a fan of his.
