John wayne existed during a time when masculinity was "perceived". He had no muscles, no stature and was middle aged. During that time he COULD be badass if the movie script just said so.

Not any more. Gotta bring some thing now to make it believable. Gotta have training, muscles, height fucking some thing.
Lets face it John Wayne was a middle aged, pot bellied, scrawny armed, bird chested movie star that passed for badass back then.

That's a bit harsh, his earlier roles he didn't have a pot belly. True alphas don't need huge muscles, its about height, looks and ratios; face/frame, hip/shoulder, muscle insertions etc.
