Children with autism

My son is an extremely picky eater. We're constantly trying new things and he'll go through fazes where he loves a certain thing for awhile but then won't even touch it. One thing that is helpful is that he loves chocolate milk lol (and he says " chocolate milk") but it's really whole milk with carnation breakfast. He's on the smaller side and this thankfully supplements some nutrition, protein and calories he needs.
My boy is the exact same way. Some he will eat just fine but other time I worry that he is not getting enough nutrients. Put some candy in front of him and it's on. @gr8whitetrukker. Yes a lot of this has definitely put some strains on the marriage. I think it comes from not really getting a lot of time with the wife. Jr is a full time job and we have two other children as well.

I might have a touch of Aspergers myself , I am socially awkward and slow to talk to people or trust . It was suggested by doctors when I was younger . My daughter has it worse...

You think your experience gives you better insight with your daughter? We've been talking about fostering/adopting someone with similar issues once my daughter finishes college. Not sure I could handle it, though.

Hopefully you have a strong knit family. Its going to take this to deal with your situation.

They say autism is hereditary. They also say having kids vaccination to close together can cause it too. Do you know if these pertain to you?

I have family members with both autism and aspergers

It's thought by some that thimerosal can cause issues. I'm not sure a definitive link has been established but I may be mistaken.

Alot of things have been speculated but i still dont know if anything has been solid proof yet. I do recall seeing evidence that for some reason athletic ppl tend to pass it along? Or the question they posed was currently alot MORE athletes seem to be producing off spring with autism and why is that? Drew Brees has a son with autism and they show cased alot of athletes on this particular program that have kids with autism. But Brees was very relavent at the time because he won his SB at the time and it was about the time i was finding out my then 3 yr old was autistic. So i always tied the two together.

Is it some thing in the food were eating as athletes? The meat? Supplements? At the time i never touched AAS so i was clear there but i couldnt help but think maybe its some thing i took? Like an OTC test booster or some thing OTC i may of toyed around with then for more gains in the gym? Idk...is it an adaptation in our system we as athletes make that causes autism? Is it purely genetic or hereditary as you say? Also why are males 5x more likely to get autism that females? Alot of unanswered questions

And doesnt like alot of different people or crowds in general . Hates Walmarts :p And shes really pretty but doesnt really date , she just works (2 jobs) and sleeps . No real private interests , its kinda hard to explain ...

I was diagnosed add/adhd growing up parents refused meds struggled bad in school couldn't sit still and then later they had trouble with me actually getting to school, graduated with a 2.6gpa, took the act and made a 30 first try never went to college took asvab made a 91 never went into the military. My wife was treated for add all thru school. I don't have any experience with autism but my 4yr old son has adhd and the docs are already talking about meds.

I worry about the medication thing when kids are so young. I have a few mental health issues and was put on medications as a kid, they messed me up pretty bad for awhile. As an adult I've learned to cope without the medications and I believe that I do pretty well. But in the case of autism I wonder if children need the medications young especially with the behavior problems that seems to develop early.

No medications when it comes to autism. Therapy and time. They come along each in their own time. That's where i come out.

I don't know how I feel about the adhd meds with kids. I had issues that the meds probably would of helped but I've learned to cope with it the older I've got.

I'm sure some kids really do need the medication for that but I also think doctor over prescribed as well. I think behavioral health modification should be tried first before medications are intended.

The wife thinks our 4 year old is on the spectrum. He is strikingly intelligent, like perhaps a 6 or 7 year old, but when it comes to his emotions he struggles... Like perhaps a 2 year old.

School are investigating. He already gets some extra help - his teacher and his head called him a genius and the most clever child they have ever taught, respectively.

But he flies off the handle if he doesn't get his own way, hates changes in routine, is very sensitive to bright lights and loud sounds... I don't think he is neurotypical.

The meds are for the adhd. And trust me when i tell you it is nothing
Nothing. Nothing. Worth gritting out

I tried all the discipline in the world. Military style discipline. Till you realize he has the look of a wild animal in his eyes and is 100% incapable of dealing with regular everyday life without meds.

I tried it the other way for 2 yrs and my wife was pushing for the meds. I didnt wanna have him rely on drugs ya know? But my approach in hindsight only lead to unnecessary hostility between him and I. Very difficult to deal with

Vaccines for kids V autism.

That's a choice between the horrific death of your child thru polio etc or a non existent link to vaccination.

The anti-vax crowd are a public menace that would prefer to see piles of dead kids and they should be dealt with accordingly.

We have a saying in our house, "Special Ed rules and Neurotypical drools":D:p
I just got my kid a bb gun for christmas. You know how these kids work. Hyper fixated on shit they like. Hes doing well with it and is a pretty good shot! Im gonna try to introduce a .22 next year when he turns 12. See how that goes. Get him down that path instead of fucking videogames. Hes a fucking videogame nut and it bothers me. He wont even drink or eat you know. Just hyper fixated on the task at hand. Gotta remind him to drink cuz he will go dry and tore up lips and he wont eat unless you remind him. Gotta steer that concentration toward the good stuff! Normal kids dont concentrate like that. Einstein was like that. And bill gates too

Thats great. Can't wait till my boy is older and can spot me at the gym

Didn't someone mention an anecdote re athletic parents and autism?

Sounds like a valid hypothesis to me. Elite athletes are the most single minded, obsessed, focussed people on the planet by definition.

If they are elite they have different genetics also by definition, so......

I would love to hear about your experiences especially how things were when you were younger.
I was diagnosed at roughly age 9. My mother was a teacher so luckily she had some knowledge of the subject. She was the driving force behind me socializing with my peers but unfortunately she passed away at 13. I went to live with my father afterwards but he was disabled and wasn't really able to be there for me so my teenage years were very rough. I didn't get along with other people in my age group and was in and out of trouble from 13 to 21. Eventually I was sent to an alternative school but I managed to graduate and get my high school diploma. Now I'm much better and I have a decent job,a nice girlfriend, and some very close friends. I will also say that not once in my life have I used that diagnosis as an excuse for my shortcomings or mistakes. I took lots of medication too but I feel that some of them did more harm than good. I don't take anything now though and I feel better than ever. Any questions are welcome.
