Corning Bottle Top filter issues

I recently decide to try Corning filters. I can't tell you guys just how unimpressed I am with them. I have used 4 of them at this point and I keep finding that they do not hold pressure like they should. I have had all of them let air in at the base of the oil container and the filter.

When using Whatman filter I have never had this happen. The same for Autofil system, no issues. Med lab supply has stock again so I just picked up what I am comfortable with and know works.

I do not know if this is an isolated incident to my purchase (amazon order, waiting on a resolution from the seller) or if others have had these issues in the past. I did try different manufactures media bottles but the spec is all the same on them so the results were identical. The pumps hold air without issue as well.

A little peeved about loosing some oil to some filters than don't stay sterile but if this helps another member avoid the same mistake I'll take it as a win.

Corning has always been sub-par IME. Not an isolated incident, I have had nothing but problems with Corning labware, including leaky filters.

Stick with Whatman, Autofil, Foxx, hell even the Nalgene Rapidflows are better than the Corning. Nalgene gets a bad rap for some reason, but I have always been pleased with what I have used from them.

Can't beat a Whatman though!

Whatman all day, erry day. I was in a pinch and made the wrong choice. Anyone want to buy 20 filters? Half price!!

Do you have CORNING bottles and adapters as well?

It looks like they are badly needed for a perfect seal
Corning filter/storage systems consist of a polystyrene filter funnel joined by an adapter ring to a removable polystyrene storage bottle with a separate sterile polyethylene cap. Receiver bottles feature easy grip sides for improved handling. Additional Corning polystyrene receiver/storage bottles can be ordered separately to increase throughput.

...w Plug seal caps (45 mm) provide an airtight seal and help minimize the risk of contamination. w
Bottles can be used with Corning® vacuum filter systems (see pages 9-10).

You can write down Part Numbers (Cat. No.) for the bottles to order the correct bottles.

Keep us posted on if they also sell custom-fit GLASS bottles for the filters.

No, I don't have anything to adapt with. Just what you would expect to see: filter, media bottle, oil and pump.

I hear them leaking above the threading on the neck.

It's not the seal between the media bottle and filter that causes the issue with Cornings, it's the actual membrane and apparatus failing. Even with Corning receivers, this issue is still present.

All of that aside, the receiver flask/media bottle brand shouldn't matter at all. It's industry standardized, whether it be 33mm, 45mm, etc etc all that should matter should be the application size.

Some of the best bottle top filters aren't even threaded and work purely by vacuum.

Corning will have you believe it's an issue with using an off-brand media bottle, however. I have already been down that road to no avail. Weak excuse IMO.

these were the first filters I've had that didn't work off vacuum, had threading.

Well don't let them shy you away of some of the better made threaded filter housings, there are some really high quality ones. I think the vacuum based bottle tops are just much easier though, as long as you're only trying to filter one at a time. They're more convenient for sure, especially since you don't run the risk of breaking the fitting off when trying to screw/unscrew the top. You can just pick them up and cap your media bottle

I just did my first home brew and still have not been able to filter. I bought a motorized vacuum pump with a glass vacuum filtration set up. I am using Whatman PTFE membrane filter (0.2 microns) but still can't get oil to pass through the filter. I currently have Autofil PP, 500mL Funnel Assembly, 0.45µm Foxx High Flow PTFE Membrane on order. Can anyone give me insight on what I may be doing wrong?

Ptfe's are hydrophobic it needs pre-wetted ...

Do you have any basic plumbing teflon tape?

I wonder if that would fix the seal?

How do I do pre-wet the filter?
Honestly i dont know the right prewetting procedure because I dont use them . But assming its not that your loosing pressure somewhere thats probably why its not drawing through the filter. Hopefully someone else more familiar with ptfe membranes will chime in , sry ...

I dont think I am losing pressure. When I cut the pump off the pressure very slowly bleeds off.

Yeah probably not then , but thats one reason why its always good to T in a valve and gauge somewhere between the pump and filter . Then you can pressure it up close the value off and see if you're leaking air somewhere at the filter unit.

Do you have a pressure gauge to see how much pressure you're holding at? I'm personally not a huge fan of PTFE but to each their own, as long as they're sterile.
