Do You Take Time Off When You Are Sick?

I'm also guilty of not taking time off when I'm sick. I haven't taken a day of in per two weeks and I know that essential rest is necessary if I want to grow. I have an embilacal hernia which is getting worse and worse but right now it's out of the question. I just don't have the funds to pay for it. And being out of te gym for two months is a scary thought. So for certain moves I go a bit lighter. And keep a brace wrapped around my core very tight for every training session.

Hope you feel better soon man. I have been sick as a dog for a week, but am going to get back to gym tomorrow. Having an injury like that has to be really frustrating, & 2 months is a long time. I have back issues, but usually I am back to gym in a week or two, & even that is hard. I am getting older (mid thirties), and it is hard to accept I am not young anymore. Guess I just need to realize injuries are going to become more frequent. Good luck w/ the hernia man.

Ya bro I'll be 33 next week and we aren't getting younger. I wasn't good to my body for a long time. As for my hernia I can really feel it with certain moves and find myself actually pushing it back in. I had surgery about 7 years ago for the same thing except it was in the lower part of the bell button. This tear is on the upper. They put in a mesh to hold the muscle together and it worked great so I know what to expect. It just kills me cause I'm in the best shape of my life and to be down for 2 months or longer sucks.

I hate to take time off while on the juice. I hate to waste the cycle. But when your sick your sick. Better to be off a few days than a week or two. Hope you feel better bro.

They should give you some kind of warrantee repair! Only been 7 years.
I bet you will be fine a few months after surgery and back stronger than ever. I took 3 years off doing nothing nothing but 12oz curls and put on about 50lbs. Finally a buddy was like "dude you are going to die...you were a monster before!...what happened". Started working out with him again, and 9 months later down 40lbs, & must be up 20-25lbs in muscle. 8 inches off waist. The Body has an amazing way of going back to its previous state quickly. Even for us old guys.

I know where you guys are coming from and as I am nearly 51 time will soon no longer be on my side so I am just going to roll with the punches when I am sick or injured.

I always try to get a workout in unless I'm projectile vomiting everywhere... I sleep better when I workout and I feel like that aids me in getting over a cold. Plus, that flood of intra/post-workout endorphins makes me forget I'm sick for a bit. But you know, I'm also 19 and can pretty much trash myself and still bounce back somehow. Maybe it's a young guy thing. :D

Old farts like me don't take shit lying down (pun intended) and I for one HATES to stay in bed too haha

Back in the day I would never miss a gym session but now that I am older and get sick I just take the time off.

I dont think it made a difference really. I didnt get sicker as a result of training or recover faster because of it. I just had shitty ass workouts and tortured myself while sneezing and coughing on everyone around me. At least if I was to be sick then damn sure someone else was too.. Jk

I take 3 days off if I get sick after that I'm generally better enough and I'm borderline fiending for the weights. It's an addiction but I can think of worst addictions.

I work through minor illness (colds, etc.), but will take time off for more serious illness (e.g. flu). In the latter case, past attempts to work through it have just prolonged the illness and failed to produce gains in the gym, so I have since learned my lesson and just rest up for a week or two.

I do as well and I bring Lysol wipes to wipe the equipment I touch after using them. As long as I'm not feeling too bad I'll get in some training if I have something like a minor cold.

Of course major illness I won't even bother going.

Last time I was sick (stomach flu), I was still able to work-out but I had to modify my work-outs quite a bit.

I didn't eat much before or after I lifted because, I figured, I wouldn't be able to hold any food down. Protein shakes were definitely out of the question.

Also, I worked-out in the 'lower-rep/heavier weight' range (3-5 reps per set). The lower reps didn't aggravate my stomach as much as the higher rep range. I only did about 10 sets per workout and stuck to the main exercises of bench-press, squat and deadlift.

i dont get sick but once every 2 years, and thats usually deathly ill where i have to go to the hospital for an anti-nausea and end up losing 10lbs in 24 hrs. otherwise i work thru, adjust my intensity accordingly, and get plenty of sleep.
