Dog recommendations for family

How was training, shedding, with the boxer? He’s currently on my list of dogs but I’ve never got to meet a boxer that wasn’t just a caged dog.

Boxers are actually my favorite breed. We inherited this one at 2 years old but I've owned a few. Even though the hair is short, they do shed quite a bit. It's not the tumbleweeds blowing across the floor like the golden, but it is there.

This boxer is great. I had to break him from getting in the trash and snatching steaks off the counter, but he caught on quick.
I raised another male from a pup and although he was dumb as shit, he was still a great dog. A female I got from a family who couldn't keep her was the sweetest, most loving dog I ever had and she kept the big dummy entertained and out of trouble.

In my opinion, boxers take very little work to be great dogs. They're on the high energy side so they need exercise.

The wifes wants a dog that’s protective of the kids.

English Mastiff (or any Mastiff variant/mix).

Stupifyingly loyal. Their bark alone is as terrifying as a shotgun blast. Having one run towards you is enough to bring on a mud check (you can literally feel their feet shaking the ground like a horse galloping).

I live directly on the Mexican border, on a river that is the major artery for illegals and drug smugglers in this state.

With my dog in our multi-acre low fenced yard I could let my daughter go outside and play without a care in the world.

Put a filthy hand over that fence and the only thing left would have been illegal flavored mastiff shit.

Don't get a long-haired dog, or one with seasonal undercoat, unless you like cleaning.

Personally, a Doberman is just about the only breed for me. Had two so far.

Labs (especially golden) and retrievers in general are either dumb as rocks (goldens) or obsessively focused on jumping in any water source - gets old fast.

I wouldn't go so far as to call them dumb. Especially since multiple federal agencies use them both for explosive material detection, drug detection, and search and rescue efforts. Both breeds were instrumental in finding survivors after 9/11.

I'd avoid huskies and chows.

I like the idea of a laberdoodle, not so much hair.
My next dog will probably be some sort of cattle dog, like a heeler or border collie
I grew up on a 60 acre farm with several collies and border collies a majority of my life. They are great dogs to work and roam. Terrible dogs to keep inside. And i mean terrible. If you live a sedentary life they are a terrible choice

I love these dogs, but never would have the energy they deserve... Great seeing other folk's border collies at the dog park etc though...
Their live wired 24/7 365. Theyll outlast anything. All day all night. Great for highly active ppl or more ideally ranchers/farmers etc

Border Collies are consistently ranked the smartest dog breed. Followed closely by poodles, German shepherds, golden retrievers, and Belgian malinois. Never been around border Collies myself.

all of those herding/ working dogs are really smart.
They are pretty hyper though, I live in an outdoors community and see them running on trails with hikers and mtn bikers all the time. epic Frisbee skills too

I'm also a big fan of mixed breeds, cow dog crossed with water dog would be ideal for me.

Best dog I've ever had chocolate lab. Very loving and loyal. Yet very protective of my wife and kids. Not over protective but will bark and growl at strangers and door bell until you tell her it's ok. Didn't chew anything growing up. Very smart and very trainable! Never leaves your side lolimage.jpeg

We have a golden retreiver. Good family dog, but the tile floor is never clean even right after cleaning it. We also have a boxer that's a great dog but he's the reason for the tile floors after ruining my wood floors one year after I installed them. He was super hyper and when the kids did anything he would start this crazy running in place thing, not getting any traction and gouging up the wood floor.

Mine are inside dogs and the only way I'd have it. Unless I could have convinced the wife to go pet free, but it was 4 to 1 on that vote.

Same here. Built house a year ago and the wood floors are ruined. We have a pittbull/blue healer that we rescued and he's great. Very smart and intimidating as hell. I can tell him "get em" and he will bark and chase your ass down the street. Funny thing is he won't hurt a damn flea he's just fuckin around. Our other rescue is a Heinz 57 (little bit of everything). He has some chow in him so he's sketchy as fuck and loves to bark at people. Also dumber than a fuckin hammer, chases the cat around the house like he's never seen her before. Hence my wood floors are ruined!

Had a yellow lab and a golden retriever before these and they were both excellent family dogs if you love hair.
