dreams

Possibly for very short periods of time. Something like 55-60% of the population reports at least one lucid dream experience and I think about 20% report them regularly. In grad school we had to try and train ourselves to dream lucidly. Females and people who are highly hypnotizable have an easier time and I don't fit in either category. It is also highly correlated with people who meditate regularly. I most cases you simply make hypnotic suggestions to the client to have a dream or sometimes not to have a dream and it sets.
A conditioned response technique also exists. Some research shows that if a person sets there watch alarm to go off every 90 minutes and looks at there hands when the alarm sounds and asks themselves if they are dreaming or awake they will condition themselves to have lucid dreams. I am not sure what hands have to do with it but I remember they were an important focus point. Supposedly this conditioned response takes about 2 days to develop.
Another techniques involved visualizing yourself dreaming shortly after waking and repeating to yourself that the next time you dream you will recognize that it is a dream.
Keeping a dream diary is also suggested.
We were trained to use them with all types of issues people face- from phobias to trauma to increased insight and bringing parts of the personality that split back as a whole.
Although it would be a cool thing to be able to do and there is a lot of research to support it, IMO is a bit hokey. People still have yet to agree on what dreams mean. Countless theories exist from unconscious conflict (Freud/dynamic) to everything in the dream being a projection of your self (Gestalt) to random neurons firing that have no story line expect when you wake up and put one to it (contemp. Neuropsy).

BTW did you have one?

I have never had a lucid dream, although I did have a strange dream, I fell into a pool of sharks, I am deathly afraid of sharks, the instant I fell into the pool of sharks I brought my self right back out of the water as if I magicly diasappered from the pool then reappered on the ground in an instant.

moralanimal, good post bro. right on. you can easily train yourself to lucid dream and there are even several books/methods out there that can help you. i learned the technique while doing some research in grad school a few years back. at the time i washaving this recurring dream that i was being chased by a street gang and it became real stressful. once i learned how to become aware that i was dreaming and take control of my dreams, i was able to kick the shit of that gang and the dream even became fun, kind of like a video game. :D with lucid dreaming you can have superhuman strength, you can fly, jump off of buildings, etc. great stuff. there are many other applications for it but i was just happy to rid myself of the terror brought on by the gang dream.

yes, i have had lucid dreams. what's really weird i never thought much about them because i thought every did.

damn, chip you nailed one of mine on the head! well not the gang thing, but the ass kicking and flying and stuff. i love those! nothing like being unstoppable!

To bang that Hottie that you missed at the supermarket when your girl was busy asking about white or yellow corn.

lmfao!!! :D plus some people use lucid dreaming as a sort of dream 'therapy', if you will, to try to resolve problems they may be having. this can be in place of or in addition to conventional psychotherapy. the idea is that dreaming is tied to one's subconscious and sometimes we can gain insight into problems by tapping the realm of the subconscious.

Although I dont have enough info (and dont give it to me b/c it is personal) I can offer a partial interpretation. Freud (who a bit of a flake) said that that type of dream would have had something to do with early pleasurable experiences of bed wetting and childhood play. This is not likely the case. A Jungian perspective would interpret the dream beginning with the water. In this theory water is symbolic of birth and new beginnings. The sharks would likely symbolize the dangers and fears associated with new beginnings or ventures. My personal favorite approach would be a Gestalt perspective which would say that all the pieces in the dream were parts of you. The water, sharks, ground, etc. This may look something like a part of you is fighting to survive (jumping out of the water), another part is unstable (water), and another part is self defeating and eating you alive (sharks). Then again this could be way off as I dont have enough info.
Chips dream is a classic homosexual dream--- kidding, just kidding. No, it is real common and usually viewed as someone having difficulty with a problem and running from it which is natural b/c they have not found a solution to the problem. The other main view is that the people chasing were parts of the self that were in conflict with other parts of self resembling ambivalence. It is real common (along with teeth dreams). What you look for is how the dream changes if it reoccurs, the anxiety reaction and the vague parts of the dream (peoples faces that were blurry or parts not recalled). The show an important piece b/c the dream consists of the manifest content (being chased) and the latent content (the true meaning of the dream). Your egos job is to protect you from anxiety and the manifest content is a psychological immune system that allows people to deal with anxieties and not feel the pain. The vague parts are pieces that are still to anxiety provoking so the dream work makes them vague to avoid anxiety. The nightmare in general is important b/c it shows an area that the minds defenses were not able to handle or cope with. This usually signifies a significant issue in the persons life.

I had a good dream last night. Long story short. I hate bobby cox. Manager of the braves. He is a fucknut. Ok, so chipper jones strains a hammy a few weeks ago. Chances are it is going to blow if he tries sprinting. Chipper is a 3rd baseman by heart. Braves have a shitty 3rd baseman now. So my dream had chipper being put back at 3rd base. THan are reserve outfielder could start in left field. Our reserve is a much better hitter than our current 3rd baseman.

This would give us a better offense and decrease the chance of chipper tearing his hammy. My dream was a little off b/c last week dumbfuck cox put chipper in with a hurt hammy and he tore the sob. So he is out for who knows how long. When he gets back, a smart manager would put him back at 3rd base. cocksucker

what does it mean when you dream that your teeth are falling out, and you spit them out of your mouth?
