FBI Requesting Data from Reddit?

Reddit deletes surveillance 'warrant canary' in transparency report
WASHINGTON | BY DUSTIN VOLZ

Social networking forum reddit on Thursday removed a section from its site used to tacitly inform users it had never received a certain type of U.S. government surveillance request, suggesting the platform is now being asked to hand over customer data under a secretive law enforcement authority.

Reddit deleted a paragraph found in its transparency report known as a “warrant canary” to signal to users that it had not been subject to so-called national security letters, which are used by the FBI to conduct electronic surveillance without the need for court approval.

The scrubbing of the "canary", which stated reddit had never received a national security letter "or any other classified request for user information," comes as several tech companies are pushing the Obama administration to allow for fuller disclosures of the kind and amount of government requests for user information they receive.

National security letters are almost always accompanied by an open-ended gag order barring companies from disclosing the contents of the demand for customer data, making it difficult for firms to openly discuss how they handle the subpoenas. That has led many companies to rely on somewhat vague canary warnings.

"I've been advised not to say anything one way or the other," a reddit administrator named "spez," who made the update, said in a thread discussing the change. “Even with the canaries, we're treading a fine line.”

Reddit did not respond to a request for comment. The FBI did not respond to a request for comment.

In 2014 Twitter sued the U.S. Justice Department on grounds that the restrictions placed on the social media platform’s ability to reveal information about government surveillance orders violates the First Amendment.

The suit came following an announcement from the Obama administration that it would allow Internet companies to disclose more about the numbers of national security letters they receive. But they can still only provide a range such as between zero and 999 requests, or between 1,000 and 1,999, which Twitter, joined by reddit and others, has argued is too broad.

National security letters have been available as a law enforcement tool since the 1970s, but their frequency and breadth expanded dramatically under the USA Patriot Act, which was passed shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

Several thousand NSLs are now issued by the FBI every year. At one point that number eclipsed 50,000 letters annually.

Here is a useful website for monitoring warrant canaries for various companies:

https://canarywatch.org/ (Canarywatch)

That is an extremely useful site. I wasn't actually aware of the whole canary bit before now even but I am certainly glad I found out.

So now you know when the canary clause is removed, then it is a heads up to everyone who goes to Reddit as it is a sign the government is on a fishing expedition. Precautions should be followed when posting info that is deemed sensitive.

Yeah, I am pretty good at not revealing any sensitive info to begin with but I'd like not to even be active on a site of which the FBI has requested data. I'm not on reddit so no biggie for me, though I know quite a few people ordered from 24k among other sources that are on reddit so I thought it would be good to share this news.

Great for sharing your experience and I am sure others should be aware of what is going on on sites like Reddit where there's a lot of talk in the open about steroids and even to some extent rec drugs too. Best to play it safe out there as Big Brother is watching and gathering information.

ProtonMail Warrant Canary
This warrant canary is updated at minimum once every 3 months, or whenever a new legally binding request is received.
Last updated March 10, 2016
ProtonMail has received a total of
User Data Access Requests
9 requests to access user data
1 requests were granted
8 requests were denied
1 legally binding requests
User Data Retention Requests
1 request to retain user data
1 request was granted
0 requests were denied
1 legally binding request

To be counted here as a request for information, the request must come through official channels foreign or domestic (either a court order, directly from a government entity, or from legal/security departments of corporations). We do not count unofficial requests such as requests made by private individuals. Legally binding requests are ones from the Swiss courts that we are legally obligated to comply with. Under Swiss data protection regulations, we cannot legally comply with foreign requests that are not supported by a Swiss court order.
In addition to requests to hand over data, we can also receive requests to retain user data. These requests typically come from the Swiss Federal police when they are asked to assist in a domestic or international investigation. In these circumstances, we may be asked to permanently retain a copy of user data to prevent the destruction of evidence in an ongoing criminal investigation. However, this data is only retained, and is NOT handed over to any third parties.
Under Swiss law, ProtonMail can only turn over user data if we receive a request from a Swiss court that is approved by the judge. ProtonMail can only hand over encrypted messages as we do not have the ability to decrypt user messages. Further details are available here.
On an almost daily basis, Proton Technologies AG also receives account deletion requests from both official and unofficial channels. These requests are too numerous to list here and are handled on a case by case basis by our security team. If presented with overwhelming evidence that the account in question is being used for illegal purposes against our Terms and Conditions, we will shut down the offending account immediately. Legality is defined based on Swiss law, and illegal purposes include activities such as phishing, ransomware, identity theft, etc, but not prostitution, tax evasion, gambling, or other activities protected by Swiss law.
Reports released by the Swiss Post and Telecommunications Surveillance Service for the past several years can be found below. These statistics cover all of Switzerland.
In 2014, there were 12 cases of realtime internet wire-tapping and 18 requests for retroactive communication metadata.
In 2013, there were 21 cases of realtime internet wire-tapping and 32 requests for retroactive communication metadata.
In 2012, there were 20 cases of realtime internet wire-tapping and 26 requests for retroactive communication metadata.
Notes:
In the 4th quarter of 2015, we received a request from the Swiss Federal Police to retain data for an account that was the subject of a criminal investigation. The data preservation request was made by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation via MLAT agreement. After consultation with counsel, Proton Technologies AG decided to comply with the request and preserve the requested account data. No data was handed over as we have yet to receive a binding court order requesting this data.
In the 1st quarter of 2016, we received a request for user data from the Ministère public of the Republique et Canton de Genève, originating from the United Kingdom, which was legally valid under la Convention européene d’entraide judiciaire en matière pénale (CEEJ Strasbourg 1959, RS 0.351.1) and the Deuxième Protocole additionnel (Strasbourg 2001, RS 0.351.12). The full facts of the criminal incident was provided to us. Given that a criminal action was clearly involved and in breach of our terms and conditions, we declined to mount a court challenge against the request. Proton Technologies AG decided to comply with the data request, to the extent that it is possible, given our cryptography.

I didn't know about this... they're encroaching on our rights a little more every day it seems like... how do government entities assume this is going to end for them? Where Will the line be drawn in this country that separates the desire for security and our need for freedom?

Civil war round II? I don't doubt it's coming in my life time. Crooked bastards gravitate towards seats of power, and what better melting pot than the United states government?

Damn shame...

Canary Watch – One Year Later

That article is a blatant lie. They're being forced to. Why start up such a project is this, with multiple entities covering it, as stated, and suddenly they think it's "run its course"?? It was growing rapidly in popularity.

What a load of shit. Something is up.

Probably the Feds have asked the organization to abandon it under threat of prosecution?

Regardless of whether or not their intention would be to monitor "terrorism", all federal entities will undoubtedly abuse this legal authority to further monitor other illegal activities throughout the forum, and seek to prosecute. Steroid uses and dealers will likely become targets in this situation. It will spread like a virus. They're moving in further on this cyber battleground against drugs.
