Goblet Squats

Due to past surgeries on my shoulders and losing range of motion. I am unable to do squats. I mean I can do them, but trying to get my hands back that far to hold on to the bar causes a lot of pain in my shoulders. I love squats, but the pain is getting to be to much. Do you guys think goblet squats are a good variation that hits some of the same muscles?

Goblet squats. I didn't know what those were called...

Any version of squats is a good alternative. How about front squats? Also deadlifts, trap bar deadlifts are good supplements.

Zercher squats are a great substitute as well. Less strain on the lumbar than a regular dead lift and hits the mid/upper traps good. Can be a bit uncomfortable at first getting used to the bar in the crook of the elbow, but we don't slap iron around because it tickles.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input. I'll look into those, maybe get a combination of all going or switching them out every couple weeks. Thanks again

To get ability to squat again: stretch your subscapularis (light stretch every day) and strengthen infraspinatus/teres minor. (Increase external rotation)

Goblet squats are similar to front squats. You should do front squats rather than goblets IMO!

There's a safety squat bar...there's also a branch warren video where he's using one. Having trouble linking a pic..sorry.
You can google the image.

If you can hold a dumbbell or db's using straps if ya want and do either both legs squats or one legged as well. Evan Centopany was tossing his cookies in the video with Mountaing dog trainer John Meadows I believe..Evan was doing one legged squats lol.

I like safety squat bar, zercher, front squats (if you can hold a front rack), trap bar squats which are all mentioned above.

Here's one I like that no one mentioned: belt squats. Unless you have access to a powerlifting gym with a westside type machine set-up, you have to improvise. I take two plyo boxes and place space between the two so there is space for a kettlebell or plates to hang. I chain kettlebells/plates to my weight belt. Make sure you have a partner to catch you because it's really easy to lose your balance and turn into a gym-fail video ala crossfit. lol

And yes, goblet squats are awesome especially for novices and injuries.

And almost forgot. Unilateral "bulgarian" lunges with dumbells in hand are awesome to. No excuse to skip leg day!

As others have said Front Squats are a better variation than goblet squats as you can handle more weight on them.

Safety bar squats or Top Squat device are two options which will allow you to do regular squats. My shoulders bark when doing standard squats and I have been using the Top squat device for several years and it works well.
