Yeah that's the business I started with $5k. Used what little money I had after I got canned from my previous job to form an LLC and buy the materials needed to wire up a few estates being built, getting them set up for automated lighting, blinds, HVAC, A/V, etc. Luckily the clients were cool with paying for a lot of the goods up front, since I didn't have the credit to float $100k+ purchase orders while the general contractor decided who to pay out and when.
I'll be the first person to agree that most people from my generation are entitled shitheads that think that you should be honored to have them working for you. I almost exclusively hire ex military to work for me, they are always hard workers and truly appreciate the chance to work. Not to mention the least I can do is give them some decent work until they find something better and more stable long term, which I encourage them to being doing from day 1 since most of them can do much better than drill holes and swing hammers for $15 an hour.
