High school kid squats 1025lbs

To be fair the squat was equipped. Not sure if Ronnie's was or not.
You can see in the vid him putting on his squat briefs, belt and knee wraps
Good lord... talk about light weight and a peanut...

We've probably all seen Coleman and his 800lb squat:

This kid makes Ronnie look weak

I guess the take away from all this is muscle doesnt have a whole lot to do with generating torque? The physique of Coleman is polar opposites to this stud Pena. I dont know what else to think

I'll lend this to your theory:

I see your point clearly
Ive never been a fan of arm wrestling. Done alot of it. I just dont believe its a test of strength. Or even a good one.
But obviously there must be a superior fiber recruitment or CNS delivery at play here with Pena.
The kid isnt even matured in to full adult hood. Let alone matured in to his training career.

Id like to hear a hypothesis on how this is even possible? I know theres smarter cats than me in here

I think the short answer is genetics.

Did you know that Andy Bolton squatted 500lbs and deadlifted 600 the first time he ever attempted the lifts? Genetics at work I'd say...

Plus, if an individual is training solely for strength they will often be activating more of the strength type muscle fiber... So some people genetically won't necessarily get bigger. Some clearly do though.

I was trying to avoid the almight G word, lol. I guess thats really all it is. And i understand that too a degree and have witnessed first hand how genetics vary so greatly in ppl. Ive had my story of DL 405 the first time i ever did it. Its just how it is and nothing can explain it.

I think it would be good to explain asking for tips from highly successful ppl like Arnold or Brian Shaw what makes them them and we always come up empty handed. Arnold looked pro stage ready at 18o_O if theres any Arnold buffs out there they easily know which pics im refeering too. Same with Brian Shaw and his strength. Many of the times what we seek wont be found in those that have superior genetics

i think genetics, and time of training play a huge factor as well. i think if you start training, and continually train as a young teenager into your 20s-30s youll be much better off. time under the bar along with developing the movements, CNS all while your body is changing into its prime. just my opinion on it. not factual statements to back it up.

as for this high school kid, obviously genetics and specificity in regards to you comment about Coleman and Pena. Pena SPECIFICALLY trains to be strong as an ox. Coleman trained to gain size. if Coleman trained one year for specifically strength(squat, bench, deadlift with very few accesories) he would have been very dominant

I suppose the same can be said for Pena?

If anyone ought to have a thorough DNA analysis, it should be this Pena kid - he must be operating at a neural control level that makes the rest of us look like we suffer from some form of Lou Gehrig's (what Stephen Hawkins has - loss of muscle control) disease.

Superhuman.

I think the point many tried to make when comparing with Coleman - I know it was my intention - is that this is a KID - and Coleman had been at it for *decades* when he did his squats. Not denying the different focus - but damn, this Pena kid is years away from being allowed to even drink FFS!

Screenshot_20170330-103135.png for example. Joseph Pena is 15 yrs old in this picture when he first squatted 700lbs!!!
Not knowing his life story im assuming he couldnt of had tooo much training under his belt at that age, lol. And that 700lbs is far greater than me or most grown adults who specifically train for power!
I think by the time he turned 18 he did 1025. Just 3 yrs difference. There is really nothing or nobody that this kid can be compared too. Its very sensational to compare him to Coleman because of the immense muscle mass difference but this kid IS stronger than big ol Ronnie Coleman. There is some thing far different at play here...

And we *never* want to be sensationalistic here at Meso.... :-)

Yes, he is clearly genetically exceptional. I suppose he most likely has a very high level of fast twitch muscle fibers. That along with leverages(genetics), his training environment all play a role into his abilities. He is a genetic freak for sure without a doubt. And I personally think he should continue with geared lifting. Gear saves you from some injuries for sure from what all the older PL's at my gym tell me.

My curiosity is what is his pressing power and agility like. Just because he is this strong at squats doesn't mean he would be great in the NFL.
