Home Brewing for 20+ years AMA!

I was using 2% BA and 18% BB for like 3 years and everything was great, filtering with 0.22 membrane as always, but one bath caused a fever for us... so many vials was thrown into the garbage. We didnt know where was the mistake so now we add like 3-4% of BA to keep all bacteria and virus away, but now we have problem with painful injections. Any ideas how to solve this?

Thanks !
I keep seeing the word “we”, change that “we” to an “I” and get it down to one person that is clean and meticulously sterile and I think your problem is gone if you really think the bottles were contaminated and were causing fever.

What kind of filter membrane were you using, often times filter membranes that are not capable of handling solvents like BA and BB can break down the filter and you are essentially going to contaminate your brew and have issues.

I would never inject anything with 4% BA, 2-3% at the most is all that should be needed.

We used 0.22 MCE (mixed cellulose) sterile filters for vacuum pumping, maybe you are right and PTFE or PVDF would be better ? Never thought about that like this way .. thought MCE is the best for homebrew.

PTFE you should always pre wet before use, PVDF are really good. I prefer and have the best flow rates and luck with Nylon membrane filters. Just make sure you never use PES filters as the BA and BB can dissolve the filter membrane and cause lots of pain.

I'm curious if using sous vide in a temp controlled bath would be good for heating rather then hot plate. If this has been mentioned I'm dumb yes i didn't search enough etc etc.
That’s more or less how we used to do things 10 years ago. Hot plates/stirrers are better
