I have an Ika C-Mag 7. Never had any problem with it
I got one off Amazon for 50 bucks . Heat is either on or off . Stirer can be controlled . Small, but fits a 500ml beaker .

Even a simple cup hotplate works fine.
Then a couple beakers on top. One with cooking oil, as an oil-bath instead of a water bath. The smaller beaker holds your brew.
A stirrer ain't really needed.
You can stir it by hand, as long as the stirrer is reasonably clean. You don't need sterility at this point, as you haven't filtered it yet.
