How secure is paypal?

I wondered if ordering gear through paypal was secure, or risky - given they would have my personal details from my credit card

You answered your own question, they have your info.

Any company doing business in the USA ***HAS*** to give the government info if they request it. We all know what happens if they refuse. Most cooperate willingly.

Companies say they will not give out your info or sell it, but that does not apply to government or law enforcement entities.
