How to Deadlift

Great Post-- I need to start making these regular in my routine. My father competed in my area for years (70's-early 80's)-- I guess deads were one of his staple exercises. He actually had friend who could dead over 950 lbs-- eventually one day it tore one of his biceps- after surgery and recuperation he was right back at it. He said "It's all I know". Hell, let's all work up to half a ton and see if we can have our triceps rip off as well!!

I'm glad you guys are doing great!!!

I love to hear posts like this.. instead of "Hey dude.. will this stack make me buff"!

Thanks for posting up in this thread fella's You guys made my night!

Great post!! I really would lke to train with powerlifters for a while so I can get my form down.

Where can i go to find local powerlifting meets in my area so maybe I can find some guys to help me with my form?

Fear: Man...I know what your sayin'. I've been doin deads regularly for 3 yrs and I've never EVEN seen anyone doing them at my main gym. I'd kill for a DL mentor.

Phreezer: You just helped my form immensley (and saved my lower back). I really did not realize how much hips came into play. Thanks!

Start off with very light weight (Like around 95lbs or so) and work with that untill you get your form down. Then slowly go up in weight... you'll figure out a weight that you can handle for 3-6 reps.

For beginners, I would recommend traditional pulling over sumo.

I don't care what anyone says: To me if you don't wish to indure injury and wish to increase forearm strength with your deadlift and perform it properly-then use a smith machine. I strangely enough perform hypertension for my lower back before I perform my smith-machine deadlifts. I still do barbell romanian deadlifts but only for a couple of workouts and only for about less than 10% of all my back workouts. But everyone workouts are different and have different ideas for everything.

Great thread Phreezer!

You know that feeling you get when doing deads and youre in the groove . sooooo smooth and can just pile on the weight??

I love that feeling!!! DL's I love em!

Well, looks like my form has been shitty with my deads too ... OK so now i not only need to work on OLY Squats but also deads :o .. I've been using way too much back. No wonder my back has always been so damn big/strong and legs so damn small

I've been doing conventional deads for about 3 months now and Im extreemly happy with the results!!! MY back, Glutes, and upper thighs are stronger and much improved... Especially my back I cant believe how strong and compact I feel, and in only 3 months.. Thank you for this post Phreezer:D

hey phreezer, i just started doing deads about 3 months ago. im having good progress, i went from starting at 225x6 to now doing 315x6. however, i always try to keep the barso close that it scrapes my shins and has to go over my knees. i thought that was the right form? can you please explain?

Hey phreezer,
I know this is an old post but this may be one of the most informative posts on here. Along with the rules of the board this should be mandatory reading for all newbies. Especially the one's who ask "how do I get big". I do sumo lifts with every leg workout. I can't tell you how many young kids at my gym I try to help with deadlifts. It seems they all learn from the same asshole who tells them to load the bar up and yank on it till your face turns blue, then bounce it off the floor and try it again. I try to instill in them that this is a dead lift and the weight needs to come to a complete rest before the upward motion begins again. I hope you don't mind but I am copying this info and passing it along to some of my younger friends who will be off to college this fall. As always thanks for the info. and your dedication to this board.

bump....for a great thread

I cant stress enough how power lifting has changed my physic.I have always had a low bf and been a hard gainer. And like most you see wandering around the gym did not hang around the bar.
You see most guys come in the gym and they go right to an isolation machine on they pick some weight up and start curling it.It was once said to me if your not 2 something with a great physic you shouldnt be doing any exercises with the words isolation in them.
You want to get bigger heavy compound movement exercises.
you want bigger bi's,heavy compound movement exercises.
you want a bigger chest, heavy compound movement exercises.
and everything else, heavy compound movement exercises.

P/T'ing is that important to all major muscle groups
