Hunting Season!!

Red deer yes but elk is drawn permit hunt only and will probably stay that way for the next ten years:(
I hear you. Here in Texas elk are considered an exotic or non-native species! I've guided hunters in Montana since 1992 and Texas has some HUGE elk. Some on high fenced ranches but big ranches. The bull in the pic I posted is on a 56,000 acre ranch so it's no canned hunt thing. Some ranchers have established huge herds of free ranging elk (all low fence) where I'm located so it's just a sweet deal. All about how you manage things. Kinda like a cycle;)

Damn. You seeing any signs of the rut starting?

Seeing some scrapes.
I made to mock scrapes and someone tore into it. Haven't seen any chasing. Our rut is usually the last week in October til the 2nd week in November depending on the weather.

Ive never been elk hunting, but i drool over elk sausage. I have a few friends who bow hunt them here in Canada. We got some big bulls around here as well one day I will have the time to hunt them. Only animal I dont care to hunt is bear, I just prefer sitting in the tree stand and watching them it's entertaining.

Just seen a monster Bull Moose at my work site, its a draw area so I could any watch. I have applied for the draw for 8 years now with no luck and know people who get it there first try it is bullshit. One of the workers that came to the site seen 8 bulls on the way down, they are out in full force looking for some pussy.

So I'm seeing the bruiser every evening hunt. Never in the am. He's walking the same general area which is 75-85 yds from my portable.

I went in yesterday and found a suitable tree much closer, but I would have to cross his path to climb. Saturday starts muzzle loader, and the following week is rifle. If I cannot connect with my bow, I'll leave him alone. If he's staying in the area, no one else is there. However when the rut hits who knows. If I don't take him, someone probably will. My guess now is he's 3 years old. He's got a nice doe with him now.

I've also kicked around the idea of ground hunting him, but any blind building would push them out now. So it would be back against the tree.

I would stay where you are in regards to stand location and smoke him with the smokepole;)

Better than spooking him out of there and not getting him at all.

Feels like cheating with a gun. But I agree.
Can't get a little closer with a climber? Don't know where deer are at in the rut in your area but alot can change in a week. Shit head might catch a smelly bitch and chase her across the county.

well im a taxidermist in the north east and its been a busy season so far at least 30 to 40 deer since oct.1 plenty of bear, moose and elk from out west colorado ,it will get crazy here once gun season starts in november we butcher ,well we do everything i do birdsh fish and the occasional gator but things are looking up this season!

I'm in a portable. Not really any trees to climb, lots of scrub and small diameter trees. I would have to cross their path to get to a climbable tree.

And who know what will happen when the rut hits. Hell, something bigger might roll in.

Muzzleloader starts Saturday. I'm going in as early as I can tomorrow afternoon, crossing the path and hoping for the best. We've had some rain so the grounds moist. If I can beat the wind and they follow the same pattern I may get a shot.

Sounds like a plan to me. Get it done brother.

Moved my climber to a newish spot. I don't normally hunt it. I've got a feeder down there, but only fill it late winter and into the summer. Don't ask why. The area I live doesn't produce monster bucks. No farms, it's warm... Any way. Had a couple nice doe stroll through at 80 yds. So I used a bleet thinking I could get them into bow range. To which they could care less... Anyway about 30 mins before dark the biggest buck I've ever seen locally pops out. Fucking huge!!!! 10point basket rack, chocolate body. Probably 3-4 years old. I'm freaking. No grunt call with me so I tried to bleet him closer, he's right on the woods line at 85ish yds. He'd look when I bleeted but didn't give a shit. He stood there and ate. Then turn and walked back into the woods. His profile as he turned was epic. Massive shoulders, big wide ass.. he's totally the alpha buck around here. I normally don't take bucks...he's on the hit list. Here's a pic, crap cell phone pic and I was shaking. The pic doesn't do it justice, it's 85yds. Those are all old growth hard woods, about 2.5' accross View attachment 76687
I love these stories. Keep them coming.

Mrhat

340 am,
heading out shortly, actually gonna head into the woods on a bicycle... then about 4 miles on foot.

Double shut out.
Pm and a am hunt. NO deer. Pattern changed. I moved my portable back out of that bottom. I'll sit on the ridge next time. I'm wondering since it's been so hot, my scent control isn't working.

Freaking bow season. It's the most rewarding and frustrating thing. But you learn tons about patterns and movement because you have to!
