I hate nerves (part 4)

I've complained about this before and I'll probably complain about it again. I started doing slow injections because I kept hitting nerves. Doing it slow allows me to feel when I'm about to hit one and I can reposition.

Well, my right leg seems to be full of em!!! Normally it's just painful putting the needle in the right side (left side is almost always painless). Well, tuesday I was doing the right leg slowly and I hit one of the nerves that makes the muscle move. OWW!!!!!!!! I didn't even have any advance warning like I usually do! Just the massive muscle contraction and lots of pain. I think I'll stay away from the right side for a while. :(

yea i hear u....i think that is why i'm so gun shy now to shoot in the quads....my very first shot in the right leg i hit a never and my leg started to twitch......... i just grunted it and let my mom inject it in.......... i push it in slow like u do now........ but i really like injecting in the delts....... i have never had a problem with them yet.....other then i have to get some1 to do it for me.......................

There is no way you are hitting nerves on a regular basis. No one, even a PMR physiican, could do that, even if they were trying.

It's probably not a nerve then, but I feel a sharp pain when injecting in my leg even if I push it in slowly. I don't have this problem when injecting into the glute, but I'm worried that I don't get a full intramuscular injection with the glute.

Don't push it in slowly. That makes it hurt much worse. Pop it in, with the same wrist action as if you were throwing a dart (you are not throwing it, of course. LOL).

when i push it in slow there have been times where i have not felt it at all........no pinch or anything......... i don't have the ballz to just push it in

This is how the nurse instructed my wife to do the glute shots.

I must be a magician then! I don't count the pain in the skin when injecting as "hitting a nerve". I know that's going to hurt to some degree regardless. I'm talking about once it is in the muscle I'm not necessarily "hitting" the nerves (cause that would cause such ungodly pain that I'd probably be screaming) but I am coming very close to them...so close that I can't continue inserting the needle at that location. I have to relocate. I have good pain tolerance so that's a lot of pain.

The TRUE nerve hits I get are not so often but often enough that I'm always paranoid about it. I've injected with the dart technique exactly 5 times. 2 out of those 6 hit a nerve and caused my muscle to spasm painfully. I've done it slowly another 14 times and only once has it ever caused a muscle spasm.

Here's where I think the problem lies. It's my right side. Serious. I've never had a "hit" on the left side and there's rarely ever any pain on the left. The right side however is very sensitive. I don't know if my nervous system is just screwy or if I'm insane but I'm telling you the truth.

Very strange either way.

I know I can't just stick to one side for very long so I'm starting to consider allowing the wife to do glute shots for me. Don't like the idea of getting darted again (that's how she'll do em) but I've also never heard of anyone having these kinds of problems with the glutes.

weatherlite -> when you have to inject on the gluteus sit down on the toilet, it might help, at least that did it for me, besides, since you have to stretch the skin a little bit you might get better benefits like that, at least that did it for me.

Weatherlite: Maybe you should stick it in your butt? (i guess that sounded bad, huh? LOL)

LMAO!!!! Yeah, my wife said she'd be more than happy to stick it in my butt! I'm scared now! LOL

Ok, next injection is tomorrow - I'll try popping it in quick. Does there happen to be a picture anywhere showing the right spot? Perhaps that is my problem.

Or if you are bored.

I always thought it was easier to do glute injections while standing.

Weatherlite, it is important to maintain a relaxed muslc while injecting. Otherwise the needle literally tears the flesh as it passes into same. Anxiety over IM technique makes this much more likely.

You definitely want to sit down and extend the leg to do thigh shots. Placing no load on the muscles makes it easier to remain relaxed.

That's how I do mine. I sit on the floor with my legs out in front of me fully extended. And I make sure the muscle is relaxed. Maybe my right side is just cursed? lol

Yeah I was sitting doing mine too with the legs not extended. This time I did the legs extended thing and just popped it in there. It took me a minute to work up the guts to do it, but it didn't hurt. I had a twitch about a second later which made the needle move, but I think that was just a random thing.

The really good news is that my leg doesn't feel sore and it has been a couple hours since injection.

Tension and movement are two big no-no's, and seem to be the cause of most soreness. I shoot glutes sitting in a chair (edge), and as relaxed as possible. Same with quads. This allows me a steadier hand than when I stand.

If I poke slow, I notice slight pain as the skin gets pierced, and then again as the fascia? gets pierced. I'm usually count to three, and then just go quickly in now.
