Joe Rogan Talks To FCC Commissioner About Net Neutrality

I feel net neutrality is a bad thing

Please explain how it's a bad thing. Supporting Trump has absolutely nothing to do with forming an opinion on net neutrality, other than basically not having the ability to form your own opinion and allowing Trump to form it for you.

maybe because he believes in free market capitalism.

Maybe so. Or maybe, like he said, he supports it only because it's associated with Trump. The former is a valid opinion, the latter really isn't an opinion at all.

With you being such a staunch Trump supporter, I'm sure I know where your support lies on this... However, I'm curious, does it give you any pause whatsoever to see so many companies that sell internet/data come out in support of getting rid of net neutrality?

Not at all. I believe in free-market capitalism

Not at all. I I believe in free-market capitalism

It's strange to me that you, or anyone, would think a company like Comcast would have your best interest at heart... They have only one group of people's best interest at heart, their shareholders.

I am a proponent of free market capitalism however, the dynamic of free market capitalism changes completely when it comes to the internet.

I have no issues with that I believe in Free market forces and competition to establish prices.

net neutrality was put into place in 2015.

what was so wrong with the Internet before that?

what changes did you see from 2015 to now?

competition

That's great, you're right. But with regard to internet providers, how many do you have to choose from in your area? There isn't

what changes did you see from 2015 to now?

NN wasn't designed to immediately make some kind of huge difference, it was a proactive measure.

Where I live, I have SOME options... But not many. An hour away from me, there is about one option... There's no such thing as a competitive market in those areas and there's barely one where I live and it's much more densely populated. How is a competitive market going to help someone where this is no competition?

What about Comcast owning NBC? They are able to encourage you to watch their content versus something like Netflix by delivering one at a high speed versus the latter pausing every few seconds to buffer. They have the ability to market to you and show you what they want you to see versus what you actually want to see.

No issues with that?

the US doesn’t have free market capitalism anymore, thus not much competition. too much regulations for smaller cable companies to compete with. the big companies like regulations to hamper their smaller competition.

Which is why they are all in support of removing NN? Come on.

too much regulations for smaller cable companies to compete with

So you think it's a good idea to give more power to the biggest corporations? That's going to help the smaller companies compete?

You've provided points both for and against your argument in the same post man.

Most people tout free market capitalism but don’t really understand the underlying principles of it.

I don’t know how technologically literate you are, but before net neutrality policies ISPs along with phone providers would throttle bandwidth, and the speed was extremely slow. If all you did was browse MESO, you wouldn’t have noticed.

Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, and other streaming platforms would sometimes become almost unplayable because the ISPs would throttle their bandwidth demanding extra fees. You wouldn’t have known this and would have just brushed this off as “my router sucks” or “my internet is too slow” maybe you would have even called them and paid more for a speed upgrade which wouldn’t have helped anyway. It was an internal issue between the service providers and content providers.

That is what is called a natural monopoly which applies to utilities because infrastructure costs are astronomical. In other words, there is no competition.

So here’s a question for you. Since you believe in deregulation of utilities and allowing the “free market” to do its job. Do you believe the same for water, sewage, roads, telephones, and electricity?

For a principle to hold valid, it must be a categorical imperative.

If you do not believe the same for the current public utilities, then I’m afraid the only logical reasoning for your ideology is to blindly follow the opinion of others.

So what about Google, Twitter, Facebook, Netflix, Amazon as well as the whole porn industry distributing the costs of their extremely high bandwidth streaming to all internet users? Why shouldn't Comcast charge Netflix for the extra bandwidth they use?

edit: I should have mentioned advertisers distributing their costs as well.

Companies like Netflix and YouTube already force potential customers to purchase contracts with ISPs.

How do you watch Netflix and YouTube without internet?

Do you think you should pay more for electricity because you don’t live in a metropolitan area? Or should you pay more because you flush your toilet more than once per day? Should you pay more taxes for contributing to traffic congestion during rush hour?

Well I sympathize with Comcast on that, reluctantly. In the end though, what the fuck do I care about billion dollar Comcast's issues with that? Complete abolishment of net neutrality is the solution to address the bandwidth issue Comcast has? Give me a fucking break...

I used Comcast as an example, because you did. Give ME a fucking break. There are tons of small providers all over the country trying to deliver decent service to their customers, but they have to bear the costs of the high bandwidth use of a relatively small number of companies.
