knee swelling from squats

Since I've started this Test E cycle I've been squatting heavy, or at least heavy for me. I normally do legs twice a week, once on monday and once on friday. I noticed a little swelling so I popped some ibuprofen but the swelling is still there.

I typically squat to 90 degrees and use a box to help me know how deep I'm going. I though about not squatting quite as deep as I have a fairly inflexible hip hinge but don't want to only do quarter squats either. In addition to squats I usually do heavy leg presses and leg extensions and once a week I hit deadlifts

Any advice? I don't want to stop heavy squatting until my cycle is done. Do knee wraps help with that? Any advice would be appreciated.

I used to do Heavy leg extensions and the next day my knees would hurt every time. When I stopped doing knee extension my knee pain went away. I wouldn't do quarter squats because they might be worse for your knees.

I forgot to add that I've had both of my ACL's replaced and I've got meniscal tears and moderate to severe degenerative arthritis in my right knee. The selling is in both knees.

Were you squatting heavy when you did your leg extensions? Did you substitute anything for leg extensions?

Do a really good warm up. At least 10 min on the bike to get started. Then do a lot of warm up sets. During these warm up sets work on your form. Warm up to 3 sets of 10 with 70% of your max. After incorporating a heavy warmup my joints don't hurt nearly half as much.

I still squat heavy without the leg extensions and haven't had knee pain. You could substitute with front squats.

Damn it, I hate front squats. In order to get it into that valley between my collar bone and front delt I have to choke myself. Maybe I'll look at those more though.

Whoa buddy, that's cardio. Cardio to me is more than 12 reps. :D

I can look at the bike. I normally do sets of ten with body weight, 135, 185, 225. Then I go to 8 reps for 275 and 315. After that I go by instinct. How does that look?

It's up to you dude, I have some knee wraps but only use them once in a while. The knee wraps add lbs. to your squat( by acting like a spring) and knee sleeves don't.

Alright I'll try the sleeves first. Do I want ones with the patella hole or no hole?

These are the knee wraps I use, they are made by harbinger.

Rehband Knee Sleeves, I've heard good things about them.

Here is an idea, drop the squats altogether and stick with leg presses. Listen, if something is hard and draws the exercise to muscle failure or close to, it works. The body doesn't say "wait a minute that's not a squat, I'm not growing" if u think u can't get big unless u squat I beg to differ, go look up Dorian Yates. He never free weight squatted. You want longevity here, why in gods name would u continue to squat with those type of conditions anyways? Be smart and listen to what your body tells you

Good point! I dont squat heavy. I only go 225 on squats for this very reason. Leg presses for me. But then again I am 43 so take it for what its worth. But I would still beat the shit out of some pussy though. LOL!

Ok so I'm not one of those that says you don't grow if you don't squat. My knees are going to hurt either way. It's one of those situations where I can hurt and not lift or I can hurt and lift. I do leg press and smith machine squat as well. I'm too young for a knee replacement and the only other option is to get another gel steroid injection into my knees.

I do appreciate the reply DD, it's just that I can't get rid of the pain, only the swelling.

That has got to suck. I wish you luck on getting pain free.
