So, this is my prosthetic. Below the knee amputation of my right leg. My prosthetic guy did a good job making it look pretty cool.

After gaining some confidence, in the new leg, I started out lifting on machines. This helped me gain some strength, but I’m still a little unstable with free weights. A few reasons 1) feeling starts just below the knee , not through my foot anymore. 2) the prosthetic foot is curved and pushes my body weight forward 3) stabilizing the leg’s side to side motion during squats and deadlifts is difficult.

anyone else have similar experiences? I’m looking for some helpful hints/tips to get the most out of my leg days.

Best excuse to skip calves ever.

I have a friend that gets around in prothesis for both legs... So, I can't really offer a ton of information because he can't do leg day at all. However, I have made some observations on what he does do (because it's impressive) and I also have worked on single leg movements for a bit and understand the balancing act...

Biggest thing I can say is start small. Do the machines and then incorporate dumbbells. Weight distribution that isn't as fixed as a barbell helps you get used to the "sway" of finding balance. There are some movements you may not be able to feasibly do. Limiting ROM helps, then slowly increase as you form a neural pattern. Breaking lifts down into several movements is helpful, even if you have all of your limbs... Ex. Lunges: don't lunge all in one movement... Take one step forward and pause, find your balance, stretch down, hold and balance, stand up into your stepped forward stance, take another step forward and repeat. This will be a lot easier than lunging with every step and leaning into it.

Can’t wait to try breaking my leg lifts down. Seems so logical, but I’ve never thought to try it.
