Meso Book Club

Okay, now I'm reading another article that says the first movie will be only the first book, if that's the case it makes sense they aren't in it. So, maybe that was just clickbait. I still feel like they'll botch the movie.

Yeah. From what I understand its movies and a tv series to bridge between. So they wont be in the first one.

It makes a little more sense after reading more. Especially the part about how it takes place after the events of the book. That could really open up the door for a lot of events to change and it wouldn't technically be untrue to the book.

The actors that play the characters in great books rarely live up to the mental image we create of who they are to us. There's no way to put all 7 massive dark tower books into a screenplay without doing a LOT of trimming. So no, the movies can never live up to the books in most cases. I thought they did a good job on the lord of the rings trilogy but that's only 1 instance I can think of

Stephen King novels are notorious for getting butchered in the transition to the big screen, too. They're talking like it'll just be one movie for one book, even still it'll be lots of trimming.

True. But a lot of his books have turned out great IMO. Misery. Shawshank. Green Mile. And im real interested to see the new It.
I think the Dark Tower will be good. It has quality people attached and everyone understands how big it is to fans. Of course itll have to leave out some book stuff, but that could be good (Cough Giant Spider and Man in Black Cough)

Misery was the best of them in my opinion. Kathy Bates/James Caan was perfectly cast for those roles. I read that book at least 5 times before I saw the movie and movie seemed right out of my own head. Very well done.

Yeah, the public isn't ready for that scene, lol. There's a lot of scenes I can think of that will be too much for the uninitiated.

I haven't read Misery or The Green Mile, only seen the movies. Last I counted I've read something like 30-40 King books.

Seems like Cujo was fairly accurate except you lose the chapters from the dog's point of view.

Desperation is one of my all-time favorite books and that movie didn't do the book any justice. That was one of the most intense horror books I've read and the movie sucked.

True. I didnt even finish watching it, it was so bad. I liked the way Desperation was written with The Regulators. Same characters, same bad guy, but completely different.

I liked Desperation better, but Regulators was a cool concept.

The Talisman and Black House would make cool movies if done right, too.

The Talisman is one of my favorite King books. He and Straub came up with some pretty cool shit for that one. Desperation was an awesome one. Tak! The dome was just nonstop crazy action the whole time. I liked that King wasted no time spreading carnage.
Let me put a thought out there about the dark tower. The gunslinger goes into the tower and to the top where he steps through a door which takes him back to the first line of the first book "The man in black crossed the desert, the gunslinger followed". Reincarnation reference? I've always thought King put elements of spirituality and the paranormal into his works.

Dark series was the Shit! I'm a Steve Patterson or Peterson?it's been a while but the Alex cross series had me going!and Sydney sheldon
James Patterson. The cross novels were ok. Some of them I liked, others not so much. My favorite Patterson book was The Jester

Spoiler alert, lol, and here's more so don't read if you haven't read the books. The first time I read that series the ending pissed me off. The second and third times I read through them I realized the ending was perfect. In the story they say Ka is a wheel and it kind of makes the story never ending that way. It's not a definite ending and the fact that there's that little change means he might get things right the next time. It's really up to your imagination. If you read that one link I posted it says the movies take place after the book, as in it's the beginning, but he has the Horn of Eld this time. So, really anything could happen and it technically wouldn't be untrue to the book because that little change might make things unfold differently this time.

I'll have start getting into some of these king books you guys are talking about.

Any fellow star wars nerds in here by chance?

If you start the Dark Tower series the first book is a little slow, get to the second one and you'll be hooked. Any of those others anyone has mentioned are great, too.

Sorry, I grew up a Star Trek: The Next Generation nerd.
