MLS Benzyl Alcohol Foul Smell

I have been buying stoppered 100ml bottles of USP Benzyl Alcohol from med lab supply.

The first one started smelling very strong like sulphur after I had it for about 3months. I emailed their support and they replaced it in sept (4mo ago). The bottle they sent me initially smell proper: like almondy canola cooking oil.

I have used it 3-4 times, always withdrawing using a sterile 1cc syringe. Each time was about 0.55ml each. I store it upright in a dark dry cabinet.

Today I withdrew some and definitely got a whiff of sulphur so squirted some on a paper towel, and it’s defiantly fouled.

Their support isn’t going to replace this bottle, and they’re only like $6 each, but I’m wondering if anyone else has issues with stoppered BA smelling like sulphur?.

It’s either:
A) a byproduct thiol from manufacturing impurities, or
B) the BA is leaching from the rubber stopper

Because BA should only smell very very faintly.

Did the color change in anyway?
I don't know what it's supposed to smell like but I use those as well..as to whether it's good or not...

Likely oxidation, it converts to benzaldehyde which kind of smells like almond but with a sharpness to it. After that it converts further the worse it gets into benzoic acid, which is nastier.

I had a vial with a slightly bloated stopper..I assumed it was a bad crimp and transfered it to my vials...

Those stoppers suck tho. For a company selling alk vials and ptfe stoppers you'd think they'd put some better stuff on their products.

It has to be an impurity or solute because even benzoic acid just barely smells like almonds

Their lack of interest or concern about the issue repeating itself is much more frustrating to me than paying $6 for another bottle. Next time I am going to buy a screw off top.

After explaining how I stored it in the dark, I offered to send the bottle back so they could research it, and I asked for the COA. She actually suggested that my storing in the dark could be the issue, and didn’t send the COA, which made my blood boil and I fired off 3 more angry emails last night, we’ll see if she actually send the COA, but USP Benzyl Alcohol should never under any circumstance smell anything other than almonds.

They should 100% refund you and correct this and look at their stock to make sure anything else is not affected luckily mine isn't but I don't know when you ordered this exactly maybe it's a different batch can I look at your batch number does it even have one?
