need a good camp knife

i need to get a good camp knife. blade length about 6" or so. i'll be going out west this year into the wilderness and need a good all-around blade. i dont want a "Rambo" or "survivalist" type bullshit knife. i want one that has a good hard blade, but not too hard that its brittle or too hard to sharpen.

i was thinking about K-Bar or cold steel. i know there are alot of custom knife makers that make a quality blade, but i also dont want to spend that kind of cash on a knife that i wont be using all that often. i will be going armed, so the knife is just for last ditch effort on protection against wild animals and for general camp work.

thank you...have a nice day

I have a leatherman knife I take on my hunts, but its more for around camp. It's got a 4" blade along w/ some other need items that come in handy. as far as something to carry in the woods w/ you I guess a "Buck" or "Old Man" knives are pretty good. 11

Joe, i collect and use knives among other things. i like k-bar, cold steel, ontario knife, and boker, for no nonsense knives are all good in my book

And for the price i personaly think there a better knife than Buck but if you have more money than you do sence hell the choice is yours but Old Timers keep a good edge , ez to sharpen and have a strong handle all you couldnt ask for in a long term utilty knife.

Didn't know you wanted to kill a grizzly. 44mag. hell with the knife. but really if thats what your looking for it better be at least 10" long min. There fur and hide are extremly thick and tuff.

Case and Gerber make awesome knives. I have Gerber throwing dagger that I've used as a utility knife since I was a kid.

eleven...i dont plan on killing a grizzly. i'll be in grizzly country though, and am looking for a last resort back up to my rifle and sidearm. i know he'd kill me if it gets down to the knife, but i atleast wanna make him work for it :D . but those are the 2 reasons i need a good knife....all around camp use and last resort protection after i unload alot of lead on him, lol. i know they have thick hides and some fat, but i'm figuring 5-6" should be enough around the neck area. no?

ok, i'll check case and gerber too.

have a nice day

Trust me on this if the gun dont work find a fuckin tree to climb quick cause that bear will be pissed. But you will realy only get one GOOD shot at a bear and it runs away or charges.

LoL but it would be kewl to be out hiking and see carved on a tree J.Shmoe killed a bear here.

I have a Gerber that I like alot. It's actually one of the cheaper ones with
a rubber handle and half serrated edge. Holds a good edge though and
makes a good all around knife. Also have an Old Timer that my dad gave
me when I was a kid. Nice knife also.

BTW, my uncle is an ex Green Beret, and he showed me the coolest knife
holder a few years back. It just hooked to your belt and looked like your
average holder, but when he pulled out his knife, the damn thing would
somehow open it up. Damn if I recall how it worked, but it sure seems like
it would be handy. Next time I see him, I'll ask him how it works.

well my friend lets just hope it doesn't come to that. Hope you enjoy your trip, the rockies are a great place to be.

don't overlook cutco. they're the KA-Bar sister knives, both put out by Alcas. i've got 3 or 4 of their sporting knives, one of them was my grandfather's outdoor knife from the 50's, in perfect shape over 50 years later. the new Drop Point hunting knife just came out, great holdster - sounds a lot like the one THL was talking about a few posts back. great knives. here's the link: http://www.cutco.com/jsp/catalog/thumbnail.jsp?categoryId=90

FTW...i've been practicing my tree climbing skills :) . i'll be armed with a Marlin 45-70 and either a ruger vaquero in 45 colt with hot handloads, or just my kimber 45. i'll be in the wilderness alone this time around, so i figure i better go as prepared as possible. last time my buddy was with me, and armed as well. 2 against 1 is better than Joe vs the Grizzly :) .

thanks for all the advice gentlemen.

Joe, how do you like your kimber, I'm in the market for another 45 and I'm trying to decide if I want to go with a kimber or the new sig granite series 1911

for a single action 1911, i honestly believe you cant beat a kimber. i have a colt also, but the kimber beats it hands down. i dont know too much about the sig, but i can recommend the kimber with NO hesitation what so ever. i'm actually looking at buying another one. amazing quality and reliability.

have a nice day
