Need advice on joining the Marines

I haven't read all the post but .... are you crazy. Unless your going in for good. If your going to go into the military at least go to one were when you get out you can get a job. There's not a big demand for tank drivers in the real world............11

Very good point here! Since you dont want to do the college thing anymore, then you need to think about your future. If you plan on sticking with the military for life and becoming a senior NCO, then awesome! If not, think about what you might want to do when you get out of the military. You could go back to school and have them pay for it, which would be nice! A good bro of mine got out of the corps not too long ago, he did 4 years, and now he is f-in lost! He was an infantryman and the training he got in the Corps isnt really useable in the civilian world right now. He is currently holding a job with some mechanic back in his hometown. He knew when he was going in that he didnt want to go to college and he didnt want to be a lifer....and his biggest regret is not taking up a career field which would allow him to advance into a civilian job. But dude, seriously- i wish the best of luck to you with the corps and I sincerely hope you make it into and through firce recon training. Like you were told before, the training is going to be so f-in hard you wont believe it....not the first 13 weeks, im talkin the recon training. You just need to prepare yourself as best you can before you go and keep your head high and straight. I plan on going throught the CCT pipeline next year and im scared and nervous as all hell....but I am excited and cant even imagine the feeling of pride that comes along with graduating special forces training! Maybe we will be working along side each other before long....maybe when we hit North Korea, Libya, Syria, Saudi Arabia...wherever  peace bro

I guess thats why I own my business today, no education, and what I did in the Corps I could ge a awsome job, now dont laugh but the DEA tried recruiting me right before I got out, but they are away from home as much as the Military, If I did not go recon then I would of had nothing, not many jobs being a infintry man, shit you could always dig fighting holes,

wow great advice from all the servicemen current and former. was just thinking that if I were making the decision to go, such good advice would be both very hard to come by, and invaluable in forming the decision. I have a lot of respect for the years you guys put in, I've seen it from the sidelines seeing most of my best buddies go to, and return from, the Corps. I've seen them come back and excel in civilian life, but I will say that those who managed both men and asset in the Corps are the ones who have excelled the most in civilian life.. That skillset is very easily transferred to civilian life.. I can say that every one of them come back intelligent, disciplined, confident and 110% better men for having done it. i will echo 11's post however, the current time obviously is a tougher time to go than most. things may change with the impending elections, but either way good luck Pink. take as much information from these guys as possible, no doubt you'll benefit from their experiences. peace crew

A lot of good replies. Pink, I did a 2 year enlistment in the Army that turned out to be 2.5 years. Do what Rambo said and get everything guaranteed in your contract. READ, READ, READ the contract before you sign it!! The Air Force, from what I saw/know, is an easier life. You don't get promoted as fast, it's slow as shit, but if you're not planning on maling the military a career you won't care about becoming an non-commissioned officer. I second what 11 and Airborne said about getting a marketable job. Canon crewmember or grunt don't equate to civilian jobs.

2.5 years what did you did in that short of time? I remember when I signed a 6 year contract, I about shit my pants the next day, that was a long 6 but well worth it, I never got a bonus for reenlisting eaither and now they are gining 20K + shit when I got out for the first 6 months they tried to get me back so i could go to IRAQ wanted to give me a 30K reenlist all up front. turned it down, they only wanted me for my skill and training, I am having a hard enough time becoming a civilian now dont want to go through trying to fit in with the civilian life again,JUST TRAIN YOUR ASS OFF NOW, AND REMEMBER YOU NEVER IN YOUR LIFE DID ANY DRUGS INCLUDING STEROIDS. If you say you did once you will never get a good security clearence and kiss Recon goodby

Thanks for all the help everyone. I was contacted by a recruiter today and have an appointment at 9:30 tommorow. I have one last question before I go in there tommorow. The recruiter asked me about any legal problems and I told him ive had some tickets in the past but heres the deal, 2 years ago I was arrested for shooting a pellet gun in my friends back yard (someone 300 yards away thought we were shooting at them) and I was charged with deadly conduct a class A misdemeanor. In the end it was dropped down to a class C charge of criminal mischeif or something like that. And I think I have a warrant in some little ass city in south texas for an unpaid speeding ticket but have been pulled over since then and it never came up. Anyone know how either of these might affect me?

Hey bro not to dis the other services but Air Force is the way to go. Being a Loadmaster on the C17 has been the greates experiece ever, we arent right on the front line shooting but we do fly into iraq and afghan daily and get shot at. You will definately get treated better as an air force member. Pm me if you have any question bro, my 4 years in has been some of the greatest moments of my life. Also while army and marine grunts are getting paid $3.50 extra in the desert, us flyers are getting up to 100$ extra a day and getting are hotel paid for on top of that. If any one else has any question i will answer to the best of my knowledge
the MARINES...are the baddest mofos's...they should be getting paid the most.....

The recruiter is really your friend, he is just there to make sure your transition to MEPS is as painless as possible.

As long as you dont have a felony then you will be able to get in no problem, you probably need to tell them about your little incident cause if something happens and they find out about it later there will be more of a consiquence.

If you are worried about not getting into the military, have one of your friends call the recruiter before you go in and have him say all the things that you have done and see what the recruiter says after that.

Also if its some kind of legal issue they will give you a waiver to go into the military, its pretty much just paper work in case something happens later on, they will have something to go off of.

Rambo, I did a lot in that short amount of time. I thought I was doing two years, but then I read the contract and it said two years AFTER TRAINING!! Pink, again, READ THE CONTRACT!! Who wrote you the ticket? The city officers here don't arrest people for out-of-county DPS warrants. Your city may be the same.
