OHP vs Behind the neck press

I've tried both exercises and despite the bad reputation, I like BTN better. I like the emphasis placed on the medial delts and my traps get a good pump as well. Is it normal to be stronger on BTN than OHP?

Huh thats weird. Im stronger when it comes to OHP vs BTN but thats jus me. Either way its a hell of a good workout that I use every shoulder day. Im sure more bros will be chiming in shortly with thier take on it lol.

More guys have gotten hurt fom press-behind-neck (PBN) than any other delt exercise .
Got me 30 years ago (tore rotator cuff) Ive never really done them heavy since .
Sports medicine doctor told me to stay away from them...If you do them warm up and dont go too heavy...

Seated and standing OHP work well for me and BTN kills my shoulders. Recently tried BTN presses seated using light weight and was able to rep out some good pumps however. Going light seems to be key for them.

I want to add that deep DB presses are even more effective (and safer ,imo) than PBN's . I LOVE DB PRESSES :)

I can tell when attempting pbn its an unsafe exersize for me. I dont even attempt them anymore. Id rather live to lift another day than go tearing something up. What you said is a fune example why i will never attempt them again. We learn from our an others mistakes. Man that sux an i hope you healed up 100% from that injury. Thanks for sharing Ogh, that seals the deal on me never trying them again!!!!!Ever......

You can still do them Skull but just not real heavy or when cold . My rotator cuff tear came from heavy PBN"s cold . I was stupid back then , I was trying impress a couple of friends and I wasnt warming up . And I picked one of the worst exercises to do stupid .

I'm not sure why my OHP is weak, someone in another thread mentioned a weak core. OHP I struggled to rep 155 for a few reps. This a.m. my BTN sets were 95x8, 135x8, 155x8, 185x5, 205x1, 135x12. I love DB presses, but the DB's only go up to 100. Warm up and good form is what I'm banking on.

100lb DB's should suffice for most medium strength guys , I never even go that heavy but I can . I got 80"s that I just do real slow and controlled . NO throwing or jerking . Do them slower with implyed negatives and 3 counts . Those 100"s will work...:D

PS - Study the Mike Mentzer Heavy-Duty program , his principles I still use today

Ooops ...they are actually 85lb"ers

There are better ways to build the side delts than behind the neck presses. I don't believe it's necessary to go particularly heavy on BTN presses or treat them as a main lift if your goals are bodybuilding.

Athletes who need to build lots of strength and be stable with a heavy weight in the behind the neck position, that's another story entirely...

A little goes a long way with shoulders. Most guys can get away with no direct shoulder work outside of their bench pressing movements and some lateral raises and rear delt flys.

Absolutely, a little goes a long damn ways. All the chest presses are my primary shoulder work. Add in back day and you still get a suprising amount of shoulder work accomplished. Everything goes thru the shoulders. Like it or not

I bench twice a week and do back twice also so I don't bother with shoulder presses at all. I do wide upright rows and laterals for side delts.
