Old school BMX fans?

1987 GT performer is what I had. Rode that bike till I was 17 yrs old. Little did I know trying to find that bike again would cost 2g's+ online, and that's IF you can even find one.

My son and I went riding yesterday on our mountain bikes to this place with a ton of jumps, gap jumps etc. No way, I would end up in a body cast with some of those gap jumps nowadays! We saw some kids with shovels building jumps and taking turns going through this jump circuit they had built. You don't see that stuff much anymore, it was nice to see kids still doing it and having fun outdoors, not just sitting on video games

I will say, the level of skill with bmx riders nowadays is fucking insane compared to what we were doing on those bikes. That's in almost any extreme sport now. I think there was a guy who was the first guy to do 4 backflips in a row off a ramp not too long ago. I mean, how the hell can skateboarding, bmx, motocross, mountain biking etc get any further beyond the point it's at now? My youngest brother skateboards and the shit he attempts over and over has not only torn his body to pieces, but the mental fucks and anxiety it gives someone trying it again and again is something that doesn't seem enjoyable to a certain degree

If I'm not mistaken this was my first "real" bike. Lol. western_auto_freedom_i_lg.jpg
This is not my pic but I googled the freedom 1 frame from western auto. I decked it out with after market parts and tried to tear it up. Haha. Damn you Logan :D

Went for a ride with the kids last weekend, I hadn't been on a BMX in probably 20 years
It's fucking scary now ain't it? I'm proud to say that I was the one who showed my son how to bunny hop his bike. And one night when I was drunk I took it off a wooden ramp he has, mind you this is a 20" bike and I look like an ape on it. I hit the ramp with an all or nothing attitude and actually landed it. One of those proud dad moments where I was like "aright, I still got it!"

Tell u what though, when you can teach them something that they wanna learn and think is cool, and you can still do it, it makes everything you tell them matter! It's not like when I was a kid and adults couldn't relate, just old bastards who got on us because thats what adults did. This is different. "If he told me that and he was right about how to jump the bike then maybe he is right about the importance of waking up early and being ready to start my day." That type of shit. And if I hadn't stayed in the gym all these years I would be like every other boring parent that doesn't make sense. At least I'd like to think that

I had a bmx in the 80s and early 90s. Said bmx on it. Dunno what brand it was. Was wikked proud of that thing. We used to go down to the neighborhood baseball diamond cuz they had piles of fresh infield dirt and wed pack ot down and make a nasty lip out of it. Great big piles. Wed catch so much air off that thing and flat bottom it out. Wed also use boat ramps with make shift plywood ramps to launch in to the water to practice for our next friendly comp. It would hurt alot less if you didnt get the trick lol. It was pretty new back then. Wasnt no x games er nothin.

Now when i see a bmx its usually ridden by the neighborhood unemployed bum who has a known felony and likely a drug problem. Like clock work lol

Was a major BMXer growing up. Did a couple races but mostly jumping and thrashing around the neighborhood.
I had the chromoly mongoose with blue anodized excel wheels. Damn thing weighed a ton.
I was jealous of all my friends that had better bikes like Torkers, GT’s PK Rippers, etc. The Mongoose was the turd of the bunch compared to the others.

It was all bunny hops and fishtails!

View attachment 124623 I don’t know if you guys remember the Hutch Trick star? I had a chromed out one like this z rims and all. Those were the good days!! :)
Z-rims! Mate, just thinking about getting a pair of those gave me wet dreams back in the day! Then I got a pair & .... hmmm. Weighed a fucking tonne & if you kept the spokes loose for that cool flexy rim effect, the bastards could pop out! Absolutely bomb proof though when ran tight & soooo much more rad than Skyways mag-wheels!

I remember Hutch stuff being very very expensive, at least in the UK & you rarely saw it.

Great thread btw!

BMX or plain ol dirt trails is pretty huge where I lived years ago in PA. I rode years ago, started off with a GT, moved up to S&M later...had a Hoffman Bike when I tried out pipes, quarter pipes etc..was never really good at it...but did enjoy riding with friends etc..
