Check these videos of prairie dogs being shot. Nice footage. I've been going out to South Dakota since 1991 to shoot these little critters. They make great reactive targets. Only 2 1/2 months away from our next trip. Which reminds me I've got some work to do at the reloading bench...

To each his own I guess. I personally thought they were hilarious. So I'm fucked up. Okay, I'll buy that. And don't confuse shooting prairie dogs with hunting. There are no similarities between hunting and shooting these things.
 
Thats pretty messed up. Im wondering what that guy was using for a weapon to shoot those things.
 
Woo-hoo! I can't wait till May. That's when all the little ones are out. Munchin' spring grass and dandilions. You want to talk about stupid? They play "follow the leader" around the pasture and when you hit a fat one in the middle...they all huddle around the carnage and look for a while. Then they go back to doing what they were doing when they got shot at in the first place. The adults are the best to shoot at though. You know when you hit a biggen. You hear the bullet "pop" through your earmuffs when it connects. I'm the only one with access to 5 or 6 sections with praire dogs the shoot at. They were getting way out of hand and we had to poison them 2 years ago. They were gone the first year after. They're starting to come back now. Proliffic little fuckers. And they eat up all the pasture grass for the cows. Plus they tear the shit out of the ground with holes.

Pred, I reload too. My varmint guns are 22-250, 223, and 25-06. I shoot the 25-06 at deer too. Same bullet as for varmints. What do you shoot? The dakota reservations are getting harder to hunt on. I'm only a state or 2 away from there. LMK, I'll take ya praire doggin'. We can duck and goose from my boat blind. I kill deer every year too but it isn't really my thing.

I guess I'm a wuss.......that makes me sad.

I've hunted before as well....... I do feel it honorable to take what is needed so long as respect is given to the heirarchy and balance of the chain of life. But to enjoy just killing something?

I don't know how someone could enjoy killing anything.....well
except perhaps really stupid humans. That might be a good time.

I don't know anything about it though, if it's neccesary from a population regulation perspective etc. Even so, don't think I can understand the pleasure.

Not a flame......to each their own.

As Cronk mentioned if the prairie dogs are not kept under control, the ranchers will poison them. One way or another, they will die. Ninety percent of the time, the kills are clean and they don't know what hit them. I guess I have never seen one die from poisoning, but I can almost bet there is some suffering involved. So with that in mind.... I'm mercy killing! :D

I use a 223 and a 22-250. I've been using Nosler Ballistic Tips exclusively. 40 grains in the 223 and 55 grainers in the 22-250.
 
I dont think Occam was calling you a stupid human. It sounded to me like he meant it might be enjoyable killing stupid humans.

I agree - I think that would be much more satisfying than hunting some poor animal with little or no chance of defence. Culling certain "types" of human would be an interesting way to modify the gene pool. And if people complained we can make it fair by giving them the same guns - then it will be a good test of Darwins theory.......

HOLLY SHIT!! I watched the first video on there and it looks almost fake cause those litlte things just get blown the fuck up!! Thats like going deer hunting with a Bazooka!! WOW
 
I've seen a video of it before,so i won't watch this one :) My father bought a nice 17mm rifle,so he can shoot squirrels but i don't think he ever shot one since he had it. The 17mm round disintegrates on impact. It's cool but i don't like the scope. I'm oldschool M-16. We didn't need scopes at 500 meters.
 
my dad used to take me prairie dog shooting when i was in k and 1st grade and lived in south dakota. He was using a .308. pretty nasty. best memory from it was the rattle snake he shot and cut it head off and than the bloody stump struck his arm. The snake was a pretty neat experience. He only shot a couple of the dogs that I remember
 
this is not intended as a flame to the people who disagree or cant understand prairie dog hunting. i've never done it myself, but would love to try. from what i understand its necessary. ask some ranchers who need the land to graze cattle or horses. these things are their worst nightmare(maybe a slight exaggeration, but the dogs are bad). they dig up the land and feed on the grass. now, here comes dumb ol' bessy the cow and steps in the whole and breaks her leg. guess what...the cow gets a bullet in the head. to the ranchers, these dogs are the same as rats are to city folk....especially in NY.

as people from the city, we need to realize that life is different in the open country...montana, wyoming, idaho...etc, etc. most people wouldnt have a problem with killing rats. as stated above, to ranchers and farmers these doggies are rats. so maybe we shouldnt be so quick to judge others.

and even though i assume the remark about killing stupid humans was made in jest, just goes to show where we are heading as a society. even though i really do agree that some gene pool cleaning is needed....and bad :)
