Pre/Post workout supplements

Let’s say you are training 4 hours a day, do you think pre/post supplements will be beneficial for an 18 year old?

Obviously eating has to be solid as well as sleep and hydrate but just curious about recovery supplements.

Is this for recovery from a particular type of activity, sport, etc?

Does the 18 year old take any prescription medications, or do they have any known body/mind health problems?

Curious if you may share more. Cheers :)

No Rx for anything and no mental issues. Training for hockey so obviously gets bumps bruises and injuries but has taken very good care of his body to avoid many of them.

Travel schedule can be brutal so can get ran down but bounces back pretty quickly unless a long run of an extra intense schedule.

No. Only real recovery methods are various therapies(cryo/massage etc etc), sleep, food and rest days.
Supplements are a waste of time and money.

You don’t believe amino acids or omega 3’s assist a body in recovery?
Sleep is the best thing,we have the same age and i slept not much(7h) now i sleep as much as i can and i recover so much faster (i do cycling) and im natural (but not for long lol)
Other thing is eat carbs before during and also after training
During use energy gels or some drink
Idk much about hockey because isnt common where i live, you train 4 hours everyday?

Hockey is intense, burns a 1,000 calories per hour on the ice and they skate 2 hours a day plus a 2 hour workout. He gets really good sleep, honestly diet sleep and hydration are on point. I’m asking about anything extra that can help.

Im not doubting the intensity but the 1000kcal/hour (and i mean thats a good amount but its my burning rate in z2 rides recorded with power meter) you cant be really certain about it without power meters or indirect calorimetry but that wasnt the focus (:
But if diet sleep and hydratation are on point idk how you can improve recovery/performance without "special supplements"
Energy gels for example u use them during training? Someone calls them supplements someone food

He hasn’t used energy gels and something I will look into. He feels good for his workouts and just want to stay on top of things.

Universities have studied the calorie output but I haven’t dug too deep into it. I just know we are trying to balance a lot of calories burned. I did see one study saying an hour of vigorous skating is almost 800 calories and that wasn’t for hockey or with the added weight so it does seem plausible.

Ok! There are some studies on carb intake that show that during training its important to fuel so you can recover much better( other than studies when i eat more carbs on the bike i recover faster and feel fresh!) keep in mind u cant eat more than 60g maltodextrin for hour

He eats oatmeal right before his skate so that is good but on days there is a double skate the gels would probably be great for in between. I know the boys will take honey on the bench during games sometimes.

Any recommendations on gels you have liked? We keep him on the cleanest ingredients we can and try to avoid dyes and crappy sugar replacements.

How many days per week is this person doing 2 training sessions per day and is the year round?

2 double skate days a week, 5 days of skates and trainings (unless a day is used for travel) then travel every weekend for games with at least 2 games maybe 3 a weekend. In training at this pace almost 9 months out of the year with off season training in the summer to 5 days a week harder trainings and 3 skates per week.

Good gels are sis isotonic, you can make your own gels with maltodextrin and fructose, tomorrow going to make them and try it during long ride (i hope i dont shit in my pants lol) im going to write the recipe and i let you know im doing them at home so 1) are cheaper 2)i can make them custom
Yes gels are pretty expensive another good and simple way is to put maltodextrin in the water so when u drink u have some energy intake

So weekly training time on average?
Btw the skating calories count seem flawed because 800kcal are burned with 1 hour of continuous skating, hockey its probably sprint and rest a bit so going to burn a bit less

Having been in professional sports for the last 3 decades I gotta say: this is way too much.
Need at least one day off per week(excluding the occasional travel day)and somewhere between 2-4 weeks off entirely per year. This kid gonna burnout hard at some point.

But maybe he do some easier training during this time that is similar to a rest day if not even better

Sure as long as it doesn’t involve skating or usual training
There’s not a pro athlete on earth that doesn’t take one day per week to do absolutely nothing.

They do balance out his work load well, some workouts are yoga to help with recovery. They plan their team meals around pre/post loading while on the road. He has been at this pace for 3 years now and loves it. Personally I would be great if he wanted to walk away but he has zero interest in that. This is pretty much what hockey looks like for this age/level across Canada and the US. Many of the kids leave home at 15 to live with other families they don’t know so they can play on a team. What is common in hockey I hope never happens in any other sport. They don’t even go straight to college after high school, they have to play juniors for a year or two and then go to college. Even D1 Club hockey wants to see juniors experience. It is insane.
