It takes years to be a full time firefighter. Most firehouses you have to be a volunteer for like 5 years before you can even be considered. They don't just take some little fuckboy fresh outta high school with zero life experience.

You are right but there are firefighter academies that take recruits in and if they pass the initial tests and training successfully they are put on a list for openings.

This is my general observation and perhaps other members here who are firefighters might chime in.

I've been volunteering for almost 4 years now.(paycall actually)

I've tested against TENS OF THOUSANDS of applicants. Done dozens of formal interviews even mock interviews and countless physical agility tests. I can't even count how many days I've had to take off work to go and drive 10 hours just to take a test with virtually no chance of getting hired. I'd even drive across the state just to go and drop off some ice cream and get face time and do a station visit.
Some departments hire from only the top 1% of candidates, but most departments it's even less than that.

I also payed for my own academy (got a scholarship in high school) which was the most grueling one in my area.

I was the youngest person going threw the academy, youngest FF at the department I volunteered for, youngest EMT for the company I worked for on a ambulance, and now I'm the youngest person to get hired at the fulltime department I'm working at now.
Out of 200 applicants (which was where they capped it) I was in the top 5. And I was testing against other already fulltime firefighters in some cases.

So yeah deffidently not an easy career to get into, but well worth it IMO.
