Problems with LAT exercises

Greetings

Since 2003 I have been recovering from a spinal injury. I can't remember anything about
what might have happened. But my symptoms are similar to other people with trauma injuries. I have no idea. But anyway they finally found out that T11,12 had severe rotation of approximately 30 degrees. T10. L1 and L2 were less affected. I also had areas of the upper Thorascic spine and neck that were also affected. Apparently my understanding is that the problem travels up the spine, and currently I"ve had trouble in the Upper Thorascic and Neck in addition to the trouble I had at T11,12. When I first started treatment I couldn't walk because the rotation of the vertebrae cut off the nerve to my right leg, and I couldn't use my right leg. I started Physical Therapy in October 2005 - I started to walk on my own in June 2006 and I finished Physcal Therapy (this time on my neck) in March 2006 I worked at this very hard for 17 months. Now I"m in the individual phase where I do things on my own. The problem I'm having right now is that I'm supposed to do these exercises for the lats, the lat pullover and lat
pulldown. They are wanting me to use weight, but at the current time these exercises hurt significantly without weight. My plan right now is to try to use no weight and then small dumbbells to try to get my weight up, but I still haven't been able to tolerate this. The only thing the doctors can do for me is to send me to the pain clinic, and I will be going.. I already do heat/ice on a regular basis. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Let me know if you have any ideas.
I'm seeking to be as careful as I can. for the past two weeks I've had to limit my activity due to pain which is not something I want to do.

I'm half kidding about my username, but it's not impossible - It took Jay Cutler 15 years to become mr. Olympia and he started training at 18. I'm 45 now, so in 15 years I'll be 60
so I don't know if it's possible to do that or not, but I'll keep trying, if for nothing else to be healthy and strong - Do they have contests for older people? My dad was asking me, and he's 72 and I didn't know how to answer his question.

I really am thankful for any help. I am seeking to get to the point where I am no longer limited by pain. It's a big goal. (I'm currently on disability, and I want very much to get to where I'm productive again. My wife died suddenly in june, 2006 and I've trained very hard since her death. ) I took two weeks off when my wife died, but I've been in the gym regularly. It's still going to take a while but I've come a long way Thank god

I think it takes more than just training all the time, I think it helps to know how to train properly and eat properly or you are just going to spin your wheels. That's why I'm here I just want to learn, and if I learn anything I can help others hopefully.
