Does anyone have a problem with profiling? Why don't we encourage profiling more? Why are we checking every 5th person in line at the airports? Who's a bigger terrorist threat: an old black lady with white hair or a 35y/o beard-wearing, robe sporting Arabian dude?

What's wrong with pulling over a black guy with cornrows, a puffy red jacket driving a 75k car in an all white neighborhood? Chances are he's there for some sort of criminal shit.

If I was a cop and I pulled over a carload of long-hairs with a Grateful Dead sticker on the bumper, you bet your ass I'd find a reason to search them for drugs. Why? Because it's almost certain they have them!

I see nothing wrong with letting all the whites, blacks, hispanics and Asians go through airport security with minimal inconvenience. But if you walk in and youre wearing a towel and your wife is covered up from head to toe, then I think you are more than fair game for more extensive searches. Why punish everyone when there is a very small and concentrated group that the vast majority of terrorism stems from? Why should I have to have my carryon bag sniffed for explosives, my shoes scanned and a 2nd metal detector used on me when I am a young white male trying to get home for the holidays? Why does the white/black/Asian woman with 4 obnoxious kids get picked out for extra searches? Why should your grandma get a pat-down at security when she's 90 years old and uses a walker?

If I were a police officer and got a radio call saying "Hispanic male seen fleeing from a store after a robbery," Im damn sure not going to be stopping to interrogate some black guy, white woman or an 8 year old riding his bike. When the terrorists become white or black or Asian, then Ill change my mind. Till then I have no problem singling out the Arabs.

Second Bob...because it has been documented that the terrorists are actively recruiting "normal" civilians that look like you and I. Why coldn't an 80 year old white woman carry a bomb onto a plane. What would happen if that did occur and TSA's reasoning for letting her get thru was "well...she looked harmless." I'm all for searching everyone tring to get on a plane....and I mean everyone.

Perfect example. Last December, myself, my g/f, adn my dad were coming back from Vegas. All of us were going thru the airport in Vegas to our flights (my dad and I never fly together just in case something happened), and we had to go thru about 2-3 metal detectors. We get thru the last one with no problems and my dad says "oh shit....". I looked at him and he was holding his cigar cutter in his hand...it was in his sport coat pocket. The metal detectors NEVER went off and they never searched him. Now, 9/11 was made possible by a couple of fucking pussy ass razors and box cutters. Break a cigar cutter in half and you have 2 razorblades!!!!

I dont know about you guys, but it seems like airline seats keep getting smaller and smaller. Im not overly huge (~240 lbs), but my shoulders fill my seat and encroach into the the seats next to me. Now, its not too bad when I fly with Jewel since she only takes up half a seat to begin with. But if I fly alone and I get stuck next to some 300 pound fat black woman (like I did last year), then its very uncomfortable.

Same thing happened to me bob on my way to Vegas. I'm about 225 lbs., but have really broad shoulders and a braod chest. My girl is tiny. Of course, her and I have the middle and window seat..and she has to have the window seat so she can see the pretty mountains and all.

Anyway, this fucking big fat mammoth negro woman walks on the plane, and the whole time I'm telling heidi "..watch..I guarantee this bitch sits next to me." Heidi started laughing and was like "...nah, she'll sit somewhere else". Sure enough...that fucking bitch plops her big ass down next to me for 6 hours...bitch was sweating the whole time and she smelled like cheese.

I'm a little divided on this issue. I agree with you with regard to Arabs, partly. Obviously, when young middle-eastern men are blowing themselves up. Searching old black women doesn't make much sense. But I believe it's much deeper than that. You've alluded to this fact as well Grizz.

Say, for example, that this 80yo black woman is wearing a large overcoat in the middle of August, in Texas, smells heavily of perfume, and is chanting softly. Do you skip her because she's a black woman? Common sense says no. Profiling says maybe. How about a young middle eastern man who speaks perfect english, is wearing a wife-beater tshirt, with gold chains, and is singing along to Jay-Z on his iPod? Common sense says no. Profiling says maybe.

The problem with profiling in my opinion. Is that while it seems very reasonable when it is discussed by reasonable men, it goes to shit when you put all of these variables in the hands of your average police officer (aka moron). These men, by and large, do not have the ability to make these judgement calls. If they did, there wouldn't be so many policies governing their behavior. On what basis do you profile? If I say to the police. "We're looking for young men aged 18-27, wearing coats, smelling of perfume, and chanting." What do they do when the encounter one of my above examples? They make mistakes. It all goes to shit because they are not capable of making these kinds of judgements. Any profiling system is bound to be horribly flawed.

In terms of the ACLU, yes, that is exactly how I feel. I think they are strongly contributing to the destruction of our country. Other people of the same ilk are guys like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.

I cant think of a single case over the past 5 or 10 years where I believed the ACLU was actually fighting to protect real civil liberties. They are a far-left organization, not some altruistic fighter for justice and equality.

In the past I used to be against pofiling, but seeing how things have gone recently I think it is needed (not that it would change for me anyway, I've always been singled out and searched, although I wear normal jeans and sports tshirts such as boxing, MMA, cage etc., my friends and family tell me that my facial features do look criminal so I don't blame them).

Having said the above, I do agree with CyniQ that you can't do blind profiling as it's crossing boundaries now and you need to dig deeper, but at least for every arab/muslim you can trigger a silent alarm until he proves otherwise.

If security touches me without asking for permission I'd knock him out though...

The answer folks is a combination of the two. Keep the current random checks. Random checks are what helps to keep terrorists (and regular criminals) on their toes. If they have no idea who will be checked and who won't be they may not be so inclined to try to recruit a white kid in his 30's or a granny with a walker. Add in profiling and then they won't be able to use their traditional garb....takes away another of their avenues.

So, now they'll wear western style clothes to get through security. If they don't get tagged for a search then who cares? Seriously. Why do I say that? Because I am a realist and I have experience/education in this area. If a terrorist is determined to do something they will do it or die trying. If they want to smuggle a composite or ceramic knife on board a plane they will. Once passengers find out you can be guaranteed that they will take over the plane themselves regardless if they think the terrorist has a bomb or not. Lose a plane or a building? I think I know which route they would take.

As for explosives...well, I know way too much about this stuff. Yes, it's possible to get it on board EASILY without being detected. Even with profiling it couldn't be stopped. It only takes 1/2 a pound to disable a plane at altitude and that can be hidden in your ass crack. Literally! No metal to detect so they would never catch it unless they did a cavity-type search which they don't.

However, that 1/2 pound is only effective when used properly (and knowing where to place it is classified BTW). So, a terrorist's best bet is to get a large enough dose on board through the luggage. In most airports all luggage is screened before it goes on board. A few don't screen it at all. This is where profiling could work a little. They could use profiling to determine which bags needed a hand-check/x-ray.

Bottom line, a terrorist will succeed or die trying but the harder we make it for them the less likely they are of trying in the first place.
