Progesterone, Male Libido and Sexual function (Excellent article)

I decided to do some indepth google searching on pubmed and various other sources. I discovered this pdf that was published in 2006 and primarly speaks about the roles of progesterone on male libido and erections.

Intrestingly cocaine usuage is tired with modulating "serum progesterone" levels and thus might be the reason why people get penile shrinkage while on cocaine. This is very intresting for me as i have abnormally high progesterone which i believe is my problem.

Some intresting quotes:

"Progesterone treatment was used year's later to reduce sexual libido in men."

It also mentioned that male sex offenders were given progesterone injections weekly to stop sexual urges and alike.

Dr. Crisler has said in the past that he often sees reduced libido in association with a high progesterone level.

I have heard guys describe their penis practically falling off on cocaine so something must happen that they seem to always be armed with a blue pill

Progesterone to the female is like what T is to us so too much can't be good. We produce about half the amount from that of females

It is scary when things go wrong

But doesn't HCG increase progesterone? I've read here that that is the reason HCG provides such a good feeling.

Maybe if levels were low to begin with or being optimised on Armour this would be a good thing because it is important - you are right there

HCG stimulates your own production from what I understand so with Progesterone coming from the adrenals and testis this will go higher along with the other adrenal hormones giving an all round good feeling I would imagine

You read my mind this week Dave, I have been thinking about the relationship between cocaine and the typical shrunken penis issue.

I'll admit that Ive dabbled in cocaine also( twice a year if that...), which had the above undesired effect - it was extreme.

However on one occasion it raised my libido through the roof, i literally was able to bring myself to orgasm multiple times? This was a one off, usually it made me feel worse than ever - so hopefully anyone that reads this understands its not a magic cure!

Whats the acceptable limits for a man (UK ranges?)

Mine came back as:

Serum progesterone 1.9 [0.7 - 4.3 nmol/L]

Wow, that's interesting. I was a heavy cocaine user and lost my little friend everytime i used.never had a libido either. I thought it was because I was so stimulated, paranoid, and that I could only think about when I could do the next line. Didn't know hormones were that directly involved with effects of rec drugs.

Very interesting, thanks Dave.

Not to jump on the bandwagon here, but I was pretty thick into the shit back about 6-8 years ago. Used just about every weekend for a few years straight, totaling 10's of thousands in money and much time wasted.

I can remember not only having severe shrinkage and no desire, but actually feeling like I was losing prostate control....(leaking on underwear when I thought I was done going....)

Real glamorous huh? :o

Anyway, there is a link between Deca and progesterone related gyno, right? Regular old A-dex and other methods don't doing anything for that, do they?

This is very, very intresting as i have also experienced urinary problems (or leaking of urine). Thanks for the input here bro, every little bit helps.

With the exception of external progesterone, lowering LH seem's like the only way to control it. Also external testosterone and high DHT.

coke is a stimulant,it will kill your libido just as any other stimulant would. ephedrine as well. same woth caffeien.

Some guys will experience the shrinking penis syndrome form Cocaine more so than others, some not at all..depends on how we are built I think. The main reason why this happens is because it causes an adrenalin rise amongst other things, which quite strongly causes the sympathetic nervous system to dominate. In other words the fight and flight mechanism in our body is in action... blood flow to the penis is reduced even though some of the neurotransmitters which encourage sexual urges are increased.... a frustrating situation!!!

that is a good way of putting it; adrenaline is the bad guy hormone with e2 when you have too much of it

Progesterone opposes DHT according to Swale.
DHT is needed for erections too.

I dont think that any feminizing hormones above normal levels would be good for erections.

I know this doesnt apply here in mens health but certain steroids like deca and trenbolone can crush a mans sex drive, both of those are said to elivate progesterone levels.

Did some googling - found the following:

MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia: Serum progesterone

This following are normal ranges based upon certain phases of the menstrual cycle and pregnancy:

* Female (pre-ovulation): less than 1 ng/mL
* Female (mid-cycle): 5 to 20 ng/mL
* Male: less than 1 ng/mL
* Postmenopausal: less than 1 ng/mL
* 1st trimester: 11.2-90.0 ng/mL
* 2nd trimester: 25.6-89.4 ng/mL
* 3rd trimester: 48.4-42.5 ng/mL

Conventional units to SI units - conversion factors.

Agent: Progesterone Conventional unit: ng/mL Conversion factor: 3.18 SI unit: nmol/L

So for example as I am 1.9 nmol/L, should this convert as follows :

1.9 / 3.18 = 0.59 ng/ml

or

3.18 / 1.9 = 1.67 ng/ml

The instructions on the site quote
Using this table: To convert from a conventional unit to a SI Unit, multiply by the conversion factor listed (eg Albumin 3 g/dl x 10 = 30 g/L. To convert from SI Units to conventional units, divide by the listed conversion factor.

I'm shocking at maths! Would be good to know which way round I do the conversion :)

Progesterone 1(ng/mL)= 3.18(nmol/L)

you are 1.9 (nmol/L)

or

1.9/3.18=0.597~0.6
