So it’s a mixed bag, depending on what section of the military you fall in. Like any job, I imagine. Only something like 1% of the US pop is in the military, but it’s still a pretty good representation of the diversity of America.
My point about the military is not so much that their standards are low, but that, as you said, it represents a diversity. I can’t really think of any other endeavor in this country that will take a broad set of people, train them, and put them to use. Generally speaking most folks have to figure things out on their own, gain some skills and then hope those skills have value in the marketplace. That generally requires a degree of initiative which may be lacking in some.
Even still, the point stands. 10% of the US population lacks the necessary competence to arrange for their own well-being in the present circumstances. Those folks will need to be dealt with in some way or they will become a burden, with or without some kind of welfare.
