Depends on the house. Some WiFi extenders don’t do well with concrete. Certain WiFi frequencies can have issues with other things in your house. You might be better off using a standalone wireless router. Even 2 identical ones set up for extending the range. I’ve found that using Comcast WiFi (the one that’s a modem and wireless router provided by the ISP) tends to be garbage. Set that up as a bridge and spend some money on a wireless router and it’ll reach a lot better.
also, make sure your wireless cards on your devices/laptops aren’t too outdated because that could be the issue as well.
netgear nighthawk’s are pretty good.
Asus has a nice line of performance wireless routers
google nest WiFi is decent if you have other nest products to integrate with.

I like the nighthawk too and there's a model that's comcast approved...a bit pricey but has a stronger signal than the stock comcast modem/router. Comcast has those thingies that you plug into an outlet that extends the wifi range. Not sure if they really work as don't have any of those.
Old wifi cards do generally have difficulty in connecting to the Comcast unit I have tested so replacing the wifi card in my oldest laptop solved that one.

Mike, lots of rooms or a smaller area? If you have some real space to cover look into mesh networking. It's going to be your best bet. If you're in one small area of the house when you use the network a stand alone router would most likely be just fine.
Concrete, brick, wire lath, heavy horse hair plaster will all cause you problems with range. Certain household items can kill your signal dude. Microwaves, washer, dryer, refrigerator, metal surfaces, mirrors can all impede your signal strength. Don't put your router near anything like this.
Nighthawk has a good name for itself. Google products work I'm told. If money isn't an issue Cisco has some rock solid stuff but it's like buying a dang Maserati. I'm a Cisco dealer if you go that route, fyi.
No reason to use the Comcast modem either. Just saying....
cant go wrong with Cisco, use it in my enterprise. Meraki has came a long way too
Cisco also owns Linksys if my memory serves and they make some reasonably decent routers.
Cisco is everywhere and even use Cisco AnyConnect to connect to my work's VPN. Good products.
do you have any experience with orbi? I've never used it but it has good reviews.
not personally but know a few that set them up and have nothing but good things to say about them.

Netgear or Linksys for home is usually a pretty safe bet. Just picked up a Nighthawk and it is significantly better than what it was replacing. More coverage and faster. Plus the guest mode is nice for visitors. Check the reviews on amazon for whatever you buy...sometimes they are shipping alternate models and not *exactly* as advertised (like shipping old ones that can't be upgraded or new model with less features, etc).
Yep most of my fellow IT admins use either one for their home networks as well as for connecting to work systems via VPN. Properly configured home routers also will help prevent cyberattacks on connected devices in the home. I am going to be purchasing a Nighthawk to slave off the comcast modem, and will set the modem as just a modem and letting the Nighthawk handle the home network.
set bandwidth restrictions lol.

Get a mesh type system. I have google mesh and I have not looked back. Regular WiFi routers are junk
