rehab cycle: test, deca, albuterol, gh

Not sure which one of us got the worse deal. You can still work upper body, but it's going to take a while for that wrist to heal. I should be back sooner, but I can't do anything but legs and abs while I'm waiting.

No you definitely got the raw deal man. I'll be back to moving 8-10 rep weights in about 5 more weeks.

Doc said only 3 weeks in the cast.

Hit the gym this morning supposedly for PT which I do twice a day mimicking the PT they give me at the doc. Too bad there's not a hot chick to stretch me when I'm done like there is at the doc's!

After that I decided to try squatting again, and found I could hold the bar in place with all four fingers - a major improvement. Just did 5X15 pause squats at 135lbs, but it felt good to have any weight on my back again. Also did 5X15 leg press with feet together trying to hit quads - the leg extension machine kills my knees.

I even managed some 95lb barbel rows, but I had to pull the bar to mid-abs instead of lower chest to avoid shoulder pain. Not sure my back even knew it was working, but I consider it progress anyway. Now I'm icing my shoulder for 20 minutes every hour. There's no swelling, but I'm not taking chances.

Damn, that's not too bad. I'm hoping I will be back to normal at about the same time, maybe sooner if the GH is doing anything for me.

From the surgery. The doc was really proud of these pics. I'm not sure if that was due to the extent of the damage or how good it all looked after she was done. It all looks like sushi to me, but I was suitably impressed when she showed them to me. I might want her to do the other shoulder...

At PT Saturday the doc said heavy squats and deads are shoulder safe. I guess that's the difference between a "normal" orthopedic surgeon and one that caters to sports injuries. Funny, though, when I mentioned doing barbel rows I was told that was not so safe. They have me doing rows in PT with a band so light I can't tell I'm holding it.

My lower back was pretty tight from pause squats on Friday, so yesterday I barely managed two sets at 315. Deads were pathetic, and I ended up doing time on the inversion table between Easter meals. I guess shoulder safe isn't the same thing as back safe.

Talk about getting back on the horse , Flenser got right back on it.....way to go ! Yes a sports medicine doctor is different than regular doctors , they know that hard exercise is the best way to rehabilitation ; plus they know the juice is also a soft tissue healer ... Keep at it and watch for pain/swelling . ;)

Thanks Oregon, it's good to get some encouragement. My friends and family keep telling me to take it easy, so I don't hurt myself. After a while all that negativity starts to wear on the resolve. At least my doc gets it!

Slipped out of the office at lunch for a short mountain bike ride. I took the squishy free ride bike and stuck to baby trails, but it felt good to be back in the woods pedaling instead of walking. There was some... discomfort in the shoulder, but not enough to cut the ride short. Icing it now just in case.

Went in Tuesday intending to just do a few working sets of squats and leave, but I got bored and decided to superset pause squats and leg press. Started with 315X8 pause squats and 10 of whatever 12 plates works out to be on the leg press. It seemed like a good idea at the time, even though my low back was still super tight. I could barely get my butt below my knees, and holding it there for two seconds was agony. I meant to do 5 sets, but missed the last rep on the leg press on set 4, so I ended it there.

My back felt sort of stressed out when I left but not really injured, but this morning I’m in a lot of pain. My lower back is trashed, and I get nerve pain when I press on my spine in one spot. It will probably be next week before I try squats or deads again. I thought I was being conservative staying with pause squats and light weight. Oh well, live and learn.

At PT this morning (I disguised my back pain) they added a couple of new exercises, including some wide grip cable pulls with something approaching real weight. Still so far besides front and lateral raises, there are only pulling exercises. I asked about this and was told at PT they only do “functional” exercises which don’t include any pressing movements. That makes absolutely no sense to me, especially considering the reason I first went to the doc was because I couldn’t bench without a lot of pain. Instead of explaining she said I was welcome to do them on my own... So I took that as permission to bench press. I have enough weight at home to hurt myself, so I will try tonight, starting with a 12lb bar, and see what happens.

Forgot to say I'm moving from one aas injection a week to two effectively doubling the dose, so 300mg ew on all three test, deca and eq. I have a couple of beach vacations coming up starting in June and after my post surgery binge I feel like a fat slob. Need to drop a lot more weight before I go. I also bumped the T3 up to 100mcg to see how my body handles it.

just happened upon this post flenser, i had a 3 anchor labrum surgery last year....it was at the very top where the bicep tendon attaches...it was a smooth tear....pt for 12 weeks as i recall...I went to gym 6 days a week after week 1 of surgery done all legs, lower back and abs....you will start the rubber band stuff about 8 weeks i think...its a pain but i will say my shoulder has never felt better..its stonger than my other hands down....hit me up if you have any questions about anything...looks like you have everything under control tho...GREAT JOB

Ouch, I think yours was a much worse tear than mine. I didn't need any anchors, and from what I've read it takes a long time for tendons to reattach. I was on the bands just 6 days after surgery. Most of the rehab now is more about the tendonosis than the tears, they just like to remind me the tendons are still weak and easy to injure.

WOW, i guess mine was alot worse...but thats great news to be honest i think it took me like 7 months to start pushing weight around like i did before. yeah check out youtube on labrum with anchors...its just crazy...they show how they do it..

I watched a couple of those youtube clips before my surgery just to get the proper perspective. Watching them drill holes in the bone was some freaky shit. A coworker had his biceps tendon reattached to his forearm a few years ago, and because of his size the doc used rivets instead of just sewing it to the bone.

I tried bench and standing press last night when I got home. Now I know why the therapist said I was welcome to try it on my own. She was probably laughing about it after I left. I just used a 1" 12lb bar for a bench trial, and managed 10 reps before the pain was too much to handle. I then did 20 reps on standing press with slightly less pain. I iced the whole shoulder for 45 minutes after that and the pain mostly went away.

This morning the shoulder was sore and unhappy, but I worked through the usual PT on my own and range of motion is still OK. I'll try benching the bar again tonight to see if I'm making things better or worse.

Was told at PT Friday I have a badly inflamed bicep tendon. We talked about all the exercise I’m doing outside of PT - mountain biking, benching, overhead press, etc. She said it was more likely the long work hours using the PC. I switched back to right hand mouse, and started typing only with the right hand. It’s only been two days, but programming one handed really sucks. I get frustrated 30 seconds after I sit down. It must take a special talent to get addicted to internet porn!

PT has become more challenging as well. They have me doing several shoulder exercises while in a plank position. I was sweating and breathing hard in the first five minutes. I guess I told them the PT was too easy once too often. It’s good stuff, though. I had already started hitting abs hard at the gym, so this wasn’t quite as humiliating as it could have been.

Don’t know what was wrong with me Friday. All the planking crap at PT today was pretty easy. It was sort of a letdown, since I didn’t have time afterward to get to the gym.

The bicep tendon is no longer sore and inflamed, so I might try some light curls tomorrow. It’s still impossible to bench a 45lb bar, but I have a 22lb short bar I can sort of bench with limited range. Overall strength is still way down from before the surgery. I’m nowhere close to a PR on anything. Hopefully I’ll get most of that back when I stop cutting in June.

I cut the T3 back to 50mcg ed. At 100mcg I had a constant headache and resting heart rate was almost 80 bpm. Also, BP this morning was 128/75 which is pretty high for me. Getting my abs back before vacation isn’t worth all that..

Hey man congrats on gettn throu the shoulder ordeal. I have had 2 main surgeries. one for a shoulder that disclated about 300 some odd times, so a labrum tear with a rotator cuff repair, so 360 degree right shoulder done and most recently i was fused L4-S1.
I do remember the shoulder being a bit of a whore as far as range of motion , mine was buttoned down tight, and had to work with a PT to get that range back through painful sessions of stretching it. I think i took much longer than you to return to weights with the shoulder, i took 5months off i believe.
anyways having been through this, I wish you luck. a steady pace is always the kindest.

The doc told me before surgery she would have me benching within six weeks after starting PT. I think I would have run away if she had said 5 months. I feel extremely lucky I didn't make it any worse. I tried every goofy trick I could find on the web to avoid going to the doc, and several of them did make things worse.

L4-S1 is three vertebrae right? I seem to injure that area pretty regular. It has always healed afterward, at least so far. I'm surprised it took longer with your shoulder than with the back fusion to get back in the gym. If I ever need surgery, though, I'm going to hit you up for the name of your surgeon!

This logging stuff is really addictive. I feel guilty if I don't log something at least every couple of days.

Cutting the T3 back to 50mcg cured my headache, and my BP is already back to 117/72. I was dropping fat before I bumped it up to 100mcg, so I'll leave everything else as is.

Have been dealing with a lot of joint pain, I believe from the Genotropin. I have a lot of arthritis in my back, knees, hands and feet. Today was the first time in more than a year the pain was enough to make me cut a workout short. Was planning to try some light deads this morning after squats and rows, but my hands and knees were screaming at me to stop. I gave in and left after some abs work. I'll do them on Thursday, pain or no.

The PT said I only need 2 sessions a week from now on instead of 3, because I’m “already doing a lot of advanced exercises”. She must have been talking about the planks and cable pulls. I do them at home anyway, so I guess it doesn’t matter how many sessions I have. Maybe they just wanted to get rid of the big sweaty BB and concentrate on their slower moving patients.

Snuck in a mountain bike ride before the storms moved in. Will probably be the last one of the week if the weather forecast is correct. I took several small drops and a couple of large log crossings, and the shoulder didn’t complain at all. As long as I don’t bend my elbow more than about 15 degrees I think I can start taking 3' and smaller drops.
