Russian biathlete Ivan Cherezov has been banned from competition for five days due to abnormal levels of haemoglobin in his blood from a pre-competition control Friday.

Elevated levels of haemoglobin, an oxygen-carrying protein in the blood, is an indicator, though not proof, of doping or blood manipulation.

Cherezov has been banned while anti-doping officials from the International Biathlon Union (IBU) await the analysis of further tests.

"In accordance with the rules Cherezov has been banned from competition for five days," said Jim Carrabre, who heads the IBU's medical commission.

"We have carried out anti-doping tests and will have the results within two weeks."

Cherezov, a 28 year old who won world championship gold in the relay, was subject to a similar decision in December 2007 although the subsequent doping controls cleared him of any wrongdoing.

The IBU bans athletes from competition when their haemoglobin levels are above the permitted threshold of 17.5 decilitres per gram of blood.
