WV to Maine is no joke. I don't know if his hips carried him that far but it was a serious quest, that I am sure of.I was getting BBQ at a place right off of the AT a few years back. Guy walked in and ordered some food and sat next to me while we waited. He looked a little worse for the wear.
Turned out, he was hiking it with his daughter. She was leaving for college soon and they decided to have one last father daughter thing before she moved away... They were hiking from WV to Maine.
He passed along a little idiosyncrasy of hiking the AT that I always thought was kind of funny: when you start on the AT you can get maps. The maps have a lot of info on them and they let you know about food choices at certain checkpoints. The problem is, many of the checkpoints are in rather remote places and the restaurants tend to change a lot. The BBQ place we were at, for example, had been a pizza place not too long before and it's since changed again. The map said it was still a pizza place...
So, he said they had been hiking for about 6 hours that day expecting pizza... He said that they were craving it all morning, as you probably would during a 6 hour hike. Then he arrives only to discover.... BBQ. "I like BBQ too, don't get me wrong", he said. "But... I really was looking forward to that damn pizza."

He never talked much about food but he went on and on about a rust proof pistol he bought for the run. Apparently the AT is ripe with bears. From the looks of your picture I'd agree!
Never gone camping?!?!?!Yeah, there is definitely plenty of area for bears!
We thought about trying it for a long weekend... I've never gone camping, let alone hiked for several days straight. I could hike home though if I wanted!
We go camping on the river in Maine, saco river. Always a blast!Yeah, there is definitely plenty of area for bears!

So a basic day on the river...Nope... I'm an air conditioning kind of guy.

Wake up hungover and wishing you didn't have a pee boner. You enjoy a Coleman stove breakfast of eggs, bacon and toast. Your coffee is percolating. You clean up the dishes in the river and do your best to wash off in the cold water, Maine river water. No amount of HCG will plump those bad boys up after that! You slowly pack up and head out down the river, drinking or smoking or just enjoying the sun and music as you drift. Sometime in the early afternoon you beach on another sandbar and do the damn thing all over again.
It's cool to take the kids. They love that stuff. It's cooler as an adult only trip though!!
All I know is the stars are so amazing out away from the city. We don't get that where I live.
now that is pristine that far north. Damn. I'm a little jealous here.It sounds fun in theory...
I spent a few weeks in the North Maine woods... It's really something up there. Could toss a stone into Canada from where we camped. But, I had a bed and a bathroom.
It was a lot of fun... I imagine I'd have fun if I camped too though. I planned a fly fishing trip a few years ago but it never happened. Have everything I'd need to camp too pretty much!
