Shoulders...

The vast majority of the guys I see in the gym do isolation movements. And when I see them a year later they look the same. While the guys that are doing the heavy compound movements show growth , go figure.

Where you from? I see exactly the opposite here. Must be something in the water...or genes.

you see the exact opposite? so you're saying, you see the people who are doing isolation all day and night growing ,correct? I know you are a fan of isolation but c'mon, every god given gym in america and elsewhere is full of people doing nothing but isolation and NOT growing. :D

When I go to the gym, and I don't work like most of you so I usually go around 1 or 2 in the afternoon, the benchs are full and there is a row of guys in front of the mirror doing concentration curls with the pink barbie weights. I head back to the very back of the gym where the squat cages are. Funny I never have to wait. And there's only two cages. We have ONE DL platform. I don't think I've ever waited for that either. I DL'd on Sat. When there were probably 200+ people. Still didn't have to wait for the cage or the platform.

I think the vast majority of people focus on isolation movements. Oops. I haven't isolated my braichialis yet. That's three more sets.

ROFL!!! hey, consider yourself lucky if you don't have to wait for the squat racks.. I have to wait for the squat racks but not because people are squatting, because their corny asses are doing 50 pound barbell curls WITH the rack. Then, it's not like they do a set or 2, there's people in the squat rack curling for literally over a half hour. I told the people in the gym to post a damn sign or something that says NO ISOLATION ON THE RACK. They didn't of course.

You've been to every gym in america???? Not mine. :D

To CyniQ: Hey, I like hammer curls!!!! :)

Sorry i havent been able to get back to you guys but thanks for the advice. I guess i have been guilty of a lot of isolation movements but i still do squats, bench, pull ups, etc. i havent tapped into the 5 x 5 program but i think i am gonna take the advice and see how it goes... i dont think i can lose trying it out.

(In my best unsarcastic voice): Stark - side laterals, tricep exercises (less dips), and alternate dumbell curls are isolation?

yes those are isolation but i only do 1 exercise for those small parts. the main focus is squats, bench, deadlift. side laterals are for the medial deltoid head because benches hit the front and deads/rows hit the rear hard. even though benches hit the tris, it isnt going to put major size on them, and the same for bis. doing rows wont completely develop the biceps so i finish it off with either straight-bar curls or alternate dumbell curls.

i usually dont have to wait for those either. its cool. everytime i go in to squat or deadlift, it is waiting for me.

Well, Good. I said CONCENTRATION CURLS. not hammer curls. :p

Anyway, I like a good burn as much as the next guy. But I hardly think you're doing your biceps any good if you're training to failure on the barbie weights.

Good, always a first for everything ;) I was actually dissapointed in what some of my guys said. I was perplexed, and I asked 25 guys (exactly) what they thought about only compound movements or used as a mjority of the time. They ALL said, "screw that". I think they should be used some of the time, and isolation as well. By the way, these guys are are pretty damn big, so that's why I say that. I partially disagree with them though (even though I shouldn't...look at them  ).

Cyniq: Lol, no you said brachialis...hammer curls hit those! I love training that muscle! Don't make fun! :)

well there it is again, not everyone neeeds to know how to train to grow.. lucky them.. genetic freaks, or juiceheads, leads them to growth, and thinking they're training is the reason for it when it's not :D. By the way I'm not saying to never do isolation, I'm just knocking on as Cyniq said, the b*tches with the barbie weights going gungho on their curls. But hey, some things never change, that is one of them.

One thing I haven't heard anyone mention is that bodybuilding is, in this day and age, a business. A BIG business. You have to take what you hear or read in that context.

If the answer to getting bigger and leaner is: Squat, DeadLift, Rest, Repeat.

Then HammerStrength couldn't sell anymore machines. You'd walk into a gym and it would be a room full of racks and cages, barbells and plates. No pulleys, no 15lb dumbells, no peck deck, leg extension, etc. What happens to all the people who make that equipment?

Flex couldn't sell anymore magazines. After all who cares about Ronnies new "FREAKY 4HR ARM BLASTING ROUTINE" if it reads "Squat, DeadLift, Rest, Repeat"? Just like everyone elses routines.

Pink Barbie Dumbells Inc. would go bankrupt.

I certainly don't want all those people to lose their jobs it just wouldn't be good for the economy. So for the good of the American economy. It's all concentration curls, lateral raises, and Nautilus machine Hip Extensions :D for me.

CQ is on point. Even in the face of the fact that only 30% of the populace works out, the enormous failure rate coinciding with running a gym, and the amount of financial backing I would need...........I would still have started a gym, if it weren't for my inability to cope with uneducated individuals in my gym. That's probably the only time when passion would go unchecked.

Not to say that they can't be taught, but that most don't want to be. There is nothing worse than being solicited for advice, and having it disregarded due to stubborn ignorance and lack of logic.

However, kudos to those who didn't underestimate the stupidity of the American public! May they leave their heirs a fortune.

i highly doubt 30% of the population works out. more like 5%.

Since we've already Hijacked this thread. I guess I may continue unabashed.

Along the lines of opening a gym. Has anyone heard of a "nonprofit" gym? The YMCA is nonprofit but their proceeds benefit churches and whatnot. I mean a nonprofit gym thats sole purpose is to provide inexpensive access to equipment, and low cost training and nutrition advice.

I mean. Gyms are expensive, the first year anyway. Gold's wants like $300 up front and $19 per month. A trainer is usually between $25 - $60 per hour. And in my experience "Personal Trainer" is synonymous with "Personal Spotter". That's all their usually good for if you ask me (with some exceptions). Thank you but I'll find someone to spot me (for free) when I need it.

Anyway. Poor people deserve a nice place to workout too don't they?? I think that as a nonprofit organization, time donated by Trainers would be tax deductible. I have tons of equipment that I've collected over the years. (A local HS gave me all their old stuff when they upgraded their gym.) I even have a location that's available. Has anyone ever heard of something like this??

growth

try one arm overhead dumbell presses along with overhead barbell as well.
i like 12-15 reps. movements like these have rocked my shoulders. :)
