Prosecutors in the war on drugs don't believe in harm reduction.

I read some of the filings and the sentencing and the feds wanted the judge to hold Ulbricht responsible for the drug overdose deaths of several individuals who had purchased the drugs via Silk Road. This emotional appeal apparently worked.

I am sure there's a lot that can be appealed on in this case so in the end he will serve less time so maybe 30 yrs max. With good time he should be free in 25 years if all appeals are successful. While people have died because of this that is considered collateral damage.

Such bullshit... rapists and child molestors get off easier than that. I hate our legal system.
Even murderers can get away with less

Theres our government , making examples of people again .

While one of their own (Dennis Hastert) is now being accused of paying off a male child 3.5 million $$$ he had a sexual affair (abuse) with in high school while he was a teacher . Thats how they roll in Washington . Watch , he"ll get off easy .....

I am so cynical of government as well...can't seem to get priorities straight

That judge was pissed!

And the defense argued that Silk Road had actually reduced harm in the drug trade by ensuring the purity of the drugs sold on the site through reviews and ratings, hosting discussions on “safe” drug use, and giving both buyers and sellers an avenue to trade in narcotics while avoiding the violence of the streets.
Prosecutors didn't even ask for life imprisonment - they just wanted more than the minimum mandatory of 20 years. It was the judge who determined life in prison was the appropriate sentence.

Lyn Ulbricht on the hypocrisy of the federal government in sentencing her son Ross Ulbricht to life imprisonment:

During her comments, [Lyb] Ulbricht criticized the government for keeping Silk Road open, suggesting that federal officials should share the blame for deaths said to be tied to the dark market’s operation.

She told reporters:

“Two of those overdose deaths happened while the government had the server. They owned and controlled it, and they kept it open, open for business, and those two deaths happened. And by their logic, are they liable as well?”

Ulbricht went on to criticize the fact that some information remains under seal regarding the indictment of two federal agents accused of going rogue during the US government's investigation of Silk Road.

But that is logic right there ^^, we can't abide logic in this country .

If Silk Road kills people and the founder/operator deserves a life sentence then by the laws of logic then the operator of the Silk Road should also serve life sentences for the two killed while they were the defacto owner/operator.

Can't jail the government though man. Government > Logic apparently.

I think those two agents diverted a sum total of over 1.5 million in Bitcoins to their own accounts. This sort of thing is commonplace. LE in general feel it is okay to steal from the dealers. "Just don't get caught" is their motto. I doubt they will wind up facing any serious charges, as prosecuting them may then give cause for retrial in the Ulbricht case. Something they definitely do not want.

Now I can see these agents getting called out on that, and the evidence has to be quite strong to make the government backpedal. There's so many things that are worthy of appeal by this guy so I can't see him getting more than 20-30 years max in the end and with good time he'll be out in 23-27.

He had people killed....In order to suppress a person wanting to come out with his identity.

He should of got the chair. You talk about rapists and child molesters, bitcoin supports child pornography and peoples murders.

I abandoned bitcoin when I came out with a fully working poker site taking in automatic bitcoin deposits, and equalling it to 1k chips principle.

I then got trolled by a guy named VOD on bitcointalk.org, thought all the work i had put into the site that I didnt deserve an oppurtunity like this to fix my teeth which im missing 4, 2 inront some in back and whole shitload on there way out.

I would of succeeded if i never posted and advertised on bitcointalk

I hope all of bitcoin fails, the people at the top of that forum think of new ways to scam people, trustable forum members to.

Its one big fuckin scam.

U.S govt don't like drug dealers unless they are the ones importing and wholesaling the drugs.

Poor guy is fucked beyond recognition. I don't think he's totally without reproach or anything but life in prison is a bit steep. In fact, it's inhuman torture IMHO>

There were allegations that he "attempted" to have people killed. If there were proof that a contract hit went down they would have given him the death penalty. Even if a hit went down, the FBI knew about it beforehand but allowed it to take place so as not to trip up their investigation. Where is their culpability?

For the record, I share your mistrust of Bitcoin.

He was accused of such, but those charges were dropped. The sentence should reflect proper punishment for the crimes for which he was convicted, in which case most rational people would agree that the sentence is ridiculously disproportionate. Let's say he did attempt to have fellow criminals killed though. It's not like we're talking about innocent people here. They chose to become involved in a criminal enterprise. I don't really have much sympathy for dead gangsters, mobsters, etc.

You're not being even remotely objective, but rather basing your opinions on your own personal experience, which has virtually nothing to do with Bitcoin or the founder of Silk Road. Why not blame all of your problems on the internet, the host of bitcointalk.org, VOD's internet provider, or the creator of poker? All of them have just as much to do with your personal decision as Bitcoin or Ross Ulbricht. Would you also condemn MESO, the creator of testosterone, and/or the guy who sold you your gear because you got gyno? Moreover, while Bitcoin does permit people to circumvent the law, the same can be said about countless creations ranging from guns to automotive performance chip programmers. If my wife gets killed in a carjacking, I'm going to go after the guy who did it, not Smith & Wesson, Mazda, or even the guy who sold the carjacker the gun. Bottom line: Take responsibility for your own decisions.

The charges weren't dropped they were/are being filed separately. The transcripts themselves of one recent attempt were quite damning. I have absolutely no sympathy for him even if I may disagree with what, in this case, he was held accountable for (blame of overdose etc)

http://www.wired.com/2015/02/read-transcript-silk-roads-boss-ordering-5-assassinations/

Wasn't accused of murdering anyone but rather intending to hire hitmen on multiple occasions, one of which was an undercover DEA agent.

If it can be proven that he is Dread Pirate Roberts then it doesn't get more damning than that and if so the fucker doesn't deserve to see the light of day again, ever. Drugs are drugs, so what in the 21st century, allow people their own free will to fuck themselves up as much as they like but murdering people is another fucking ball game.

Reason Magazine Subpoena Stomps on Free Speech
http://www.bloombergview.com/articles/2015-06-09/reason-magazine-subpoena-stomps-on-free-speech

Wielding subpoenas demanding information on anonymous commenters, the government is harassing a respected journalism site that dissents from its policies. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York claims these comments could constitute violent threats, even though they’re clearly hyperbolic political rhetoric.

This is happening in America -- weirdly, to a site I founded, and one whose commenters often earned my public contempt.

Los Angeles legal blogger Ken White has obtained a grand jury subpoena issued to Reason.com, the online home of the libertarian magazine I edited throughout the 1990s. The subpoena seeks information about commenters who posted in response to an article by the site’s editor Nick Gillespie about the letter that Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht wrote to Judge Katherine B. Forrest before she sentenced him to life in prison without parole. Ulbricht was convicted of seven felony charges, included conspiracies to traffic in narcotics and launder money, and faced a minimum sentence of 20 years in prison. The letter was an appeal for leniency.
